Erik ten Hag confirms plans to sign new gk this summer
David de Gea likely to remain the No. 1 choice
Erik ten Hag wants to replace David De Gea as the starting custodian next season, but he only has £15 million to work with.
The Spaniard's contract expires at the end of the current season, but Manchester United do have the option of prolonging it by an additional year.
Because they want David de Gea to sign a new contract with more favourable terms, the club would want to do so. Due to a contract, he agreed to in 2019, when he was acknowledged as one of the best goalies in the world, De Gea is Manchester United's highest-paid player at £375,000 per week.
Even though the Spaniard won the Golden Glove last week with a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth, his reputation isn't as good as it once was.
Although Erik ten Hag would prefer a goalkeeper who seems more at ease with the ball at his disposal, the Dutchman has other positions in his roster that need more urgent attention, among them centre forward and central midfield.
That would not preclude De Gea from losing his starting position, but it is not the high-profile acquisition that many United supporters believe the team needs in favour of Erik ten Hag to develop his playing style at the club as well.
"De Gea will stay but I will not say he’ll always be my N1 GK. I say this because in a club like United there must be competition always, in all positions”, ten Hag tells Time.
Erik ten Hag will want to spend his initial summer spending budget of approximately £100 million on a striker.
Besides that, player transfers will pay for the costs; up for sale are people like Scott McTominay, Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek, Harry Maguire, and Alex Telles. Manchester United will look to add more talent in the summer.
