Top five goalkeepers with most clean sheets in 2022-23 season

These players have been superb between the goalposts.

With most of the talking points in the matches are about who scored the goal, we shift our attention to the shot-stoppers who make that goal count. At the midway point in the season, we look into the goalkeepers who made a difference for their club making crucial saves, winning matches and denying the opposition being the last line of defence.

Here are the top five Goalkeepers with the most clean sheets in the 2022-2023 season in Europe.

5. Nick Pope (Newcastle United) - 17

When Nick Pope came into the Newcastle squad in the summer from the relegated Burnley side, most of us didn’t think that he would be such a bargain for the Saudi owners. With 17 clean sheets in 41 matches in all competitions for the club he has been helping his club battle for the top four spots in the Premier League. He was an important factor for Eddie Howe’s squad for their run in the League Cup, having four clean sheets in five matches. If he hadn’t got the red card against Liverpool before the final, Newcastle maybe had a chance to win a major trophy since 1955.

4. Alex Meret (Napoli) - 19

With a total of 19 clean sheets in 43 matches in all competitions, the Napoli number one came in with a surprise in the list. Top spot in the Serie A, table toppers in their Champions League group stage; a lot of this couldn’t come by without Alex Meret. With a lot of players departing in the summer, people speculated that Napoli wouldn’t be able to be such a dominant force this season.

But with time, they showed what can do. Not just in the league but in the Champions League also Napoli showed what a force they are and Meret handled his defensive duties very well, with just six goals conceded in seven matches with three clean sheets. Meret had shown how important an asset he has been for the squad and should be given credit if Napoli manages to win the Serie A this season.

3. Alex Remiro (Real Sociedad) - 22

In a turn of events, no one expected that the Spanish international Alex Remiro would be on the list. Having 22 clean sheets in 47 matches in all competitions, he has helped Sociedad to be in the third spot of the LaLiga table and also to top the table in their Europa League group having four clean sheets in six games conceding just two.

2. David De Gea (Manchester United) - 25

David De Gea, the current Manchester United goalkeeper has 25 clean sheets in 55 matches in all competitions this season. After Erik Ten Hag was appointed as the manager of Man United in the summer of this season, he has totally transformed the club and brought back the glory in Old Trafford and David De Gea has played a crucial role in getting that glory back.

He is the longest-serving player in the current squad for United and has always been a wall in the goal for the club. Recently he surpassed club legend Peter Schmeichel, to have the most number of clean sheets for the club. He had made some important saves in the final of the Carabao Cup against Newcastle helping United to win their first silverware in six years.

1. Marc-Andre ter Stegen (FC Barcelona) - 27

Still, in a financial crisis, it hadn’t stopped the present Barcelona team under Xavi to complete at the highest level. And a lot of the credit should go to its defence and mainly their number one. With only eight goals conceded in the league and a total of 27 clean sheets in 47 matches in all competitions, Marc-Andre ter Stegen has the highest number of clean sheets for a goalkeeper this season.

Winning the Super Copa de Espana by beating Real Madrid in the final, top of the LaLiga table and recently winning against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu in the first leg of the semi-final of Copa Del Ray, the German international has been an important asset for the Catalan club in their recent success.
