Graham Potter's Chelsea career by numbers
The English manager was recently sacked by the Blues
Chelsea's dismal performance cost their coach Graham Potter his job, as the Englishman was fired on Sunday after only seven months on the job.
After investing over £500 million (S$820.76 million) on new acquisitions this season, the Blues dropped to 11th in the Premier League table after a 2-0 home loss to Aston Villa on Saturday.
Bruno Saltor, a former defender for Brighton, has been given temporary leadership.
Even though Chelsea has only won three of its past 11 games, they have advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals, where they will play the reigning champions Real Madrid.
“We have the highest degree of respect for Graham as a coach and as a person. He has always conducted himself with professionalism and integrity and we are all disappointed in this outcome,” co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali said in a statement.
“We have 10 Premier League games remaining and a Champions League quarter-final ahead. We will put every effort and commitment into every one of those games so that we can end the season on a high.”
With the first leg in Madrid only ten days away, that tie may have been the deciding factor in the club's new American owners deciding to sign a contract immediately.Chelsea now sits 12 points off of the top four in the Premier League, making an implausible run to the club's third European Cup seem to be their only chance to qualify for the Champions League next season.
In their first season in control, the consortium formed by LA Dodgers co-owner Boehly and venture capital company Clearlake Capital has fired two managers, including manager Potter.
Thomas Tuchel, who was last week named the manager of Bayern Munich was fired in September after guiding Chelsea to a Champions League victory a little over a year earlier.
Potter was hired by Chelsea after Brighton received $21.5 million in compensation.
But, that amount is little in light of the enormous sums the club has spent on players over the previous 12 months with little to show for it.
Yet Potter has had difficulty finding a winning combination as he tried different systems and individuals without results.
After Chelsea's Saturday loss to Villa, the 47-year-old manager received loud jeers from the Chelsea faithful. He has only won 12 of his 31 matches as manager.
He has the lowest victory percentage of any club permanent manager in the twenty-first century (39%).
