The PSG player needs a solitary goal to overtake Cristiano Ronaldo's tally.

This past Saturday, Lionel Messi added a new accomplishment to his résumé: he now holds the record for most goals scored in the history of the top five major leagues. The PSG player from Argentina has now scored 495 goals, matching Cristiano Ronaldo before he left for Saudi Arabia. He scored against Lens on Saturday.

Messi has scored 21 goals in his two seasons in Ligue 1 (his 15th in that league), compared to his 474 goals for Barcelona in LaLiga Santander. Cristiano's share of the 495 goals is broken down as follows: 84 during his first season at Manchester United, 311 during his second at Real Madrid, 81 during his third at Juventus, and 19 during his fourth at United.

By 702 goals, Messi had just one week earlier surpassed all other European club goal scorers. With his most recent goal, he now has 703 in all European club tournaments. In every competition, Cristiano accumulated 701 goals in Europe.

One goal is all Messi needs to usurp Ronaldo

Considering being aware that the 38-year-old Portuguese currently plays for Al Nassr of the Arab League, his honourable name continues to show up in Old Europe records no matter what.

Messi will try to claim ownership of a record he has been sharing with CR7 since the weekend prior. He will just need to score one goal, a mere goal, to surpass Cristiano Ronaldo, who will stay locked at 495.

But Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 834 goals in 1060 appearances with an average of 0.79, continues to retain the record for the most goals scored in the history of football.

Messi takes off from behind, winning 805 victories in 921 games (0.86). But in the paper, he is two years and four months younger.

It appears that he has enough time in this area to also clear his formidable rival of any further. Since their debuts, Messi and Cristiano have held every record there is.
