The English top flight is one of the toughest leagues in football

The Premier League, which has been the top division in English men's football since 1992–1993, has seen plenty of exciting football and great champions since that season.

After the legalisation of professional football by the Football Association in 1885, discussions sparked by Aston Villa director William McGregor led to the founding of the Football League in 1888. Preston North End were the first team to be proclaimed champions at the conclusion of the 1888–89 campaign after finishing its games undefeated.

Clubs from the North and Midlands, where modernism had already been accepted more easily compared to the South of England, dominated the league in its early years. In 1892, the Football League annexed the rival Football Alliance, solidifying its position as the top competition in the nation.

The majority of a new Second Division, from which elevation to the elite level could be obtained, was made up of former Alliance clubs. It wasn't until Herbert Chapman's Arsenal won the championship in 1931 that a Southern team was named champion.

The top four divisions of the English football league structure are currently populated by all of the teams that have ever won a championship. The only team to ever alter its name after winning a league championship is Sheffield Wednesday, which won its first three championships under the moniker "The Wednesday."
