Chelsea 'grant' Manchester City permission to speak to transfer target Mateo Kovacic
The Croatian could be set to leave the Blues
Chelsea have granted Manchester City permission to talk to their midfielder Mateo Kovacic about a possible transfer to the home of the champions. The Premier League champions are surprisingly targeting the four-time UEFA Champions League winner.
Ever since Todd Boehly took over, Chelsea have made a lot of changes to the squad. A lot of new faces joined in the 2022-23 season but were unable to take the Blues to a top-half finish. Now they have a new manager, and he will look to rebuild the team. This rebuilding will involve a lot of signings, and some players will be sacrificed to bring in some money.
Mateo Kovacic is 29 years old and has a lot of experience. He started his career at Dinamo Zagreb. Inter Milan came looking for him, and the Croatian made a move to Italy in 2013. He only spent one and a half seasons at Inter, and then Real Madrid spent some money on the youngster.
The Croatian has enjoyed a lot of success at Real Madrid. He won three Champions Leagues and a league title with the Los Blancos. Kovacic was unable to cement a regular spot in the starting 11 at Madrid. They had Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Casemiro at that time.
Due to a lack of game time, Real Madrid loaned him out to Chelsea in 2018. The next year, Chelsea decided to sign him on a permanent deal. Mateo Kovacic helped Chelsea lift the Champions League in the 2020-21 season.
Injuries have limited his game time in recent seasons. This season, he made 37 appearances in all competitions. Enzo Fernandes was a new face added by Chelsea this season. N'Golo Kante also returned from injury. This automatically shifted Kovacic out of the starting 11.
Now the Premier League champions are looking for a midfield option. Manchester United are thinking about adding more depth and a bit of creativity to their star-studded team. The Croatian is a good option for a team that is hungry for success. He has the experience of winning big things.
Manchester City will look to seal this move. They go for limited targets and usually sign them. With Chelsea giving City the green light, it will be interesting to see where Kovacic will play next season.
