Three Napoli players make it to the final team of the season.
With the Italian League coming to an end, there have been an enormous number of goals, tackles, and defences. There are players who shine the brightest even when they are not competing with their performances.
This Serie A Team of the season will focus on the players who produced one stellar performance after another throughout the 2022–2023 campaign. While Napoli cruised to their first title since 1990, the race for the top four in Italy continues to be a fierce battle involving A.C. Milan, Juventus, Lazio, Roma, and Inter Milan. It would be unfair not to discuss the magnificent season each player on the list had for their team despite not achieving the top spot.
Team Formation: 4-4-2
GK: Ivan Provedel
Team: Lazio, League appearances: 36 matches, Clean Sheets: 20
There are a couple of good goalkeepers in Serie A this season, but Ivan Provedel has been by far the best goalkeeper in the current campaign, with 20 clean sheets in 36 games. This has helped Lazio become the best defence in Serie A with just 28 goals conceded (second lowest behind Napoli) and also helped them climb up to second place in the Serie A table.
The Italian keeper has the highest save percentage of 77.2% in the league, which consists of world-class keepers with the likes of Onana, Alex Meret, and Szczesny, to name a few. Not only that, he has been able to make himself a wall between the opposition's attacks and his goal, with 4.1 goals prevented in the matches. Lazio will be assured to have him in their defence and will be confident of competing for the title next season.
LB: Theo Hernandez
Team: AC Milan, League appearances: 30 matches, Goals: 4, Assists: 3
The former Real Madrid defender seems to have found himself at home and continued his form from last season. He seemed to be contributing more to the attack and getting on the offence, with his team contributing to seven goals in total. As a defender, Theo Hernandez has conceded 28 goals and kept 10 clean sheets in 30 matches in the Serie A 2022–2023 season.
Moreover, he's made 1.49 tackles and 0.55 interceptions for every 90 minutes he's been on the pitch. Hernandez is also racking up about 0.97 clearances at the same time. Theo Hernandez has taken 34 shots in 30 matches so far in the Serie A 2022–2023 season. Of the 34 shots, 12 were on target, and the other 22 were off target. Looking into the passing aspect of the game, Hernandez passes the ball roughly 43.20 times during a game, with a pass completion rate of 80.66%.
CB: Kim Min-Jae
Team: Napoli, League appearances: 34 matches, Goals: 2, Assists: 2
The champions of Italy made a bargain signing of the season in Serie A. Kim Min-Jae's arrival from Fenerbahce proved to be quite the addition for Napoli in their title-winning campaign. An unsung hero for the Azzurri, the South Korean international has been the best centre-back in Serie A this season – hands down. And there’s plenty of competition. Not only from Monza’s Armando Izzo, but the likes of Fiorentina’s Lucas Martínez Quarta, Juventus’ Gleison Bremer, and even new signing Stefan Posch of Bologna have been excellent.
Min-Jae sits at his own table, though, he’s been intelligent with his passing in the build-up play, a warrior in the air, and resolute in one-on-ones. The 26-year-old is doing it all in central defence for the Partenopei, and you can scarcely recall a time in which an attacking player has beaten him head-to-head along with 04 goal contributions. His pass accuracy of 91% has come along with the highest accurate passes per 90 minutes with 75 passes made which is the highest in the league.
CB: Danilo
Team: Juventus, League appearances: 35 matches, Goals: 3, Assists: 3
Danilo has been a top-five defender in Serie A this season. Producing consistently for Juventus in a season that has been struck with point deductions and controversy. Danilo has taken on a leading role in the club and has been a significant part of their recent performances across Europe. With injuries hindering the Bianconeri this season, especially that of captain Leonardo Bonucci, Danilo stepped into a more significant role with this team on and off the field.
Danilo donned the captain’s armband in Bonucci’s absence and lived up to the challenge. He led his side to eight straight victories and a defence that didn’t give up a goal in 770 minutes.
As a defender, Danilo has conceded 23 goals and kept 19 clean sheets in 35 matches in the Serie A season. Danilo's goals scored per 90 minutes is 0.09. Moreover, Danilo's total G/A (goals + assists) is six for this season. Danilo has taken 24 shots in 35 matches so far making Juventus a threat to all the teams while keeping a strong hold on the defence as well.
RB: Stefan Posch
Team: Bologna, League appearances: 28 matches, Goals: 6, Assists: 2
They say never fall in love with a loan player but this player has been special. When we start to talk about the best defenders in Serie A this season, there's no way not to talk about Bologna and Stefan Posch. The Austrian fullback is one of their key players this season, both in defence and attack. Posch, who's playing as a right-back most of the time but is also capable of playing CB, has scored six goals this season and registered two assists which is one of the reasons Bologna is in the Top-10 spot this season.
Stefan Posch concedes an average of 1.17 goals for every 90 minutes that the player is on the pitch. The 26-year-old helped Bologna keep seven clean sheets in 28 appearances. He is also the third-highest goalscorer for the Red and Blues with six to his name.
CM: Sergej Milinković-Savić
Team: Lazio, League appearances: 34 matches, Goals: 7, Assists: 8
Scarily enough, it seems like Sergej Milinković-Savić gets better with each passing season. Milinković-Savić was already one of the elite players in Serie A coming into the 2022–23 campaign, recording 11 goals and 11 assists last season. This season, the Lazio superstar has seven goals and eight assists, ceding some more of the goal-scoring duties to breakout winger Mattia Zaccagni—we all know he’s already been feeding Ciro Immobile goals, too.
The Serbian has assisted eight goals in 34 matches so far in the league this season, and looking into his passing aspect of the game, Milinkovic Savic passes the ball roughly 55.45 times during a game with a pass completion rate of 76.71%. He also plays 1.23 key passes each game, which leads to significant scoring chances. Milinković-Savić is a generational athlete in midfield with his ability to bully defenders or glide past them. He is strong yet has endless stamina, and, on top of all that, he has the technical quality to pull off back-heel assists or Goal of the season candidates from beyond the box.
CM: Lorenzo Pellegrini
Team: AS Roma, League appearances: 31 matches, Goals: 4, Assists: 5
The captain of the José Mourinho side that won the Europa Conference League last season is a crucial part of Roma’s squad for the 2022-23 Serie A season. The number "10" of the Italian national team is a leader in the middle of the field. He is a great playmaker, but this season he has played close to the central defenders, cutting balls with enviable grit and ferocity. Together with Paulo Dybala, they have formed a very dangerous midfield.
Looking into the passing aspect of the game, Pellegrini passes the ball roughly 33.27 times during a game, with a pass completion rate of 79.93%. He also plays 2.55 key passes each game, which leads to significant scoring chances. He has been instrumental in Roma’s campaign, not only in the league but also on their road to the Europa League finals.
RW: Mattia Zaccagni
Team: Lazio, League appearances: 33 matches, Goals: 10, Assists: 6
Mattia Zaccagni made the move from Verona to Lazio in 2022. The 27-year-old is in his prime and has broken out in a big way, becoming one of the biggest stars in Serie A after being a solid role player for Verona. Thriving in a more attacking role as a left winger rather than a two-way midfielder, Zaccagni has scored ten goals with six assists.
Considering the passing aspect of the game, Zaccagni passes the ball roughly 31.38 times during a game, with a pass completion rate of 84.84%. He also plays 1.18 key passes each game, which leads to significant scoring chances. He has taken 37 shots in 33 matches so far in the Serie A 2022–2023 season. Of the 37 shots, 23 were on target and the other 14 were off target. Active and clinical, Zaccagni has become an absolute nightmare for defences. He draws more than three fouls on average per game.
LW: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia
Team: Napoli, League appearances: 32 matches, Goals: 12, Assists: 10
The only player who can even consider pushing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia out of the MVP top spot is his teammate Victor Osimhen because since the season kicked off, Kvaratskhelia has looked like a lock for the title of the best player of the season. He is, however, the top assist-maker in the league, with his contribution to goals coming from 10 assists. The Georgian has also registered 12 goals in his Serie A debut.
In the passing aspect of the game, Kvaratskhelia passes the ball roughly 35.41 times during a game, with a pass completion rate of 83.48%. He also plays 1.89 key passes each game, which leads to significant scoring chances.
The Georgian icon is one of the best signings of the season in all of European football. Carefree yet giving to his teammates, Kvaratskhelia is a gift to the city of Naples and the world.
ST: Lautaro Martínez
Team: Inter Milan, League appearances: 36 matches, Goals: 20, Assists: 5
The Inter Milan man had an underwhelming season by his standards in the first half. But since the World Cup triumph, he has scored 13 goals and was the second-highest goal-scorer in Serie A this season.
Lautaro Javier Martinez has taken 97 shots in 36 matches so far this season. Of the 97 shots, 50 were on target, and the other 47 were off target. He scores a goal for every 4.85 shots he takes and takes 3.59 shots per 90 minutes on the pitch. Looking into the passing aspect of the game, Martinez passes the ball roughly 22.78 times during a game, with a pass completion rate of 75.28%. He also plays 1.59 key passes each game, which leads to significant scoring chances.
ST: Victor Osimhen
Team: Napoli, League appearances: 30 matches, Goals: 23, Assists: 4
Victor Osimhen is making a name for himself in Europe. After a big-money move from Lille to Napoli in 2020, the 24-year-old has finally made a big contribution, His 23 goals in the league and led Napoli to a league title after 33 years.
The Nigerian’s intelligence of the ball is mind-blowing, and he embarrasses so many defenders with his ability to read the exact right time to spring his move. You can see how fed up even the best defenders in Serie A are with the task of marking him. A pure goal-scorer, Osimhen has a knack for stepping up in the biggest games and biggest moments. Just ask Chris Smalling or Bremer. They were both outdone by the Napoli star.
Osimhen has made 27 goal contributions this season for the Partenopei (the highest in the season), and he doesn’t look like slowing down for a second. If anything, he seems to get stronger each week, as he scores an average of 0.85 goals for every 90 minutes that the player is on the pitch. This attacking performance currently places him 1st out of 449 Serie A players who've played at least three matches.
