Strasbourg hosts the mighty PSG looking for their first win against them since 2017 in Ligue 1

The march of Paris continues in the French League as they have picked up 84 points after 36 Ligue 1 2022-23 games - only Monaco in 2016-17 (89) and PSG themselves in 2015-16 (92), 2017-18 (92) and 2018-19 (88) have done better at this stage. If they don’t lose or if they lose and Lens fails to win, PSG will be crowned French champions for the 11th time, not a surprise for a club of their stature. Mbappe has once again been the star player among the team with Messi-Neymar facing backlash from the fans and Ultras.

The middle table performers Strasbourg will be thankful for their recent resurgence resulting in their safety in the league. They have picked up 10 points in 5 matches played, losing one and drawing one, which makes them sit 6 points from the drop zone. Strasbourg have won five of their last seven Ligue 1 home games (L2), after failing to win each of their first 11 this season (D6 L5). Their star performer, Habib Diallo has grabbed the attention of all the teams in the league by breaking 20 goal mark in the league and contributing to 21 goals out of 49 that they’ve scored.

Strasbourg are unbeaten in their last three Ligue 1 games (W2 D1) and could avoid defeat in four consecutive matches in the top flight for the first time since February-April 2022 (11). They have won the most duels in Ligue 1 this season (2087), Paris the fewest (1658).

PSG have won 239 aerial duels in L1 2022-23, 73 fewer than any other team from the top five European leagues. They have won just twice in their last 30 Ligue 1 games against Paris (D7 L21), in February 2005 (3-1 H) and December 2017 (2-1 H). Among teams who have faced PSG 20+ times in L1 in the 21st century, no team have a worse win percentage than RCSA (10% - 2/21).

Player's to watch

Paris Saint-Germain: Kylian Mbappé

Kylian Mbappé has scored eight of the last 12 Ligue 1 goals, including the most recent four, scored by Paris players. He has been involved in 32 goals in 32 L1 2022-23 games, being the only player from the top five European leagues decisive in at least as many goals as games played in each of the last five seasons.

Paris striker Kylian Mbappé reached 25 goals in Ligue 1 for the fourth time (after 2018-19, 2020-21, and 2021-22) and becoming the second Frenchman to achieve this post-WW2 after Thadée Cisowski (1955-56, 1956-57, 1958-59, 1959-60).

Strasbourg: Habib Diallo

Senegalese goal machine Habib Diallo is having an incredible season with Strasbourg, breaking the 20-goal barrier and playing a central role in Auxerre's battle to beat the drop. His skill, mindset, and achievements have impressed everyone, and is one of the defining players who have made their survival successful this season. The last time a Strasbourg player netted as many in a top-flight season was in the late 70s, and back then the Alsace side were title challengers.

Match Facts

  • Strasbourg have lost just two of their last eight Ligue 1 home games against Paris (W2 D4), after losing five of their previous six (D1).
  • Paris have won their last six Ligue 1 away games but have not set a longer run since January-April 2017 (8).
  • Strasbourg are the only team yet to have won a Ligue 1 game in 2022-23 after conceding the first goal (D7 L12), while Paris are one of the three teams (with Lens and Nice) to not lose an encounter in which they scored first (W25 D1)
  • Strasbourg’s Habib Diallo has been found on 44 occasions thanks to the open-play cross in Ligue 1 this season, more than any other player.

Match Prediction for Strasbourg vs PSG

With the season reaching its conclusion, Christophe Galtier’s side is looking to end the season on a high with a six-point lead over the second-placed Lens, they will be more confident among the two sides to come away with 3 points against the 15th-placed Strasbourg who are yet to win against them in 6 years.

However, PSG would vary the team who is an attacking surprise and are a threat whenever they start making the runs towards the goal post and this match will be a test for the table toppers as they know Strasbourg have scored 6 goals against them in recent 3 meetings. We can expect attractive football as defenders of both sides will be having a very busy day in the park.

Prediction: Strasbourg 1 – 2 Paris Saint-Germain
