RB Leipzig win 2nd DFB-Pokal Cup with victory over Eintracht Frankfurt

Christopher Nkunku once again scored the decisive goal

RB Leipzig have added another major trophy to their cabinet by winning the DFB-Pokal 2022-23 final against Eintracht Frankfurt. This is their second DFB-Pokal title and that too in consecutive seasons.

The team was founded in 2009 after the Red Bull GmbH group's investment. They rose through lower divisions and gained Bundesliga status in 2016. Since then they are ever present in the German top division and finished third in the 2022-23 season.

RB Leipzig have been one of the best teams in Germany in the past years. On their return to the top flight, RB Leipzig finished as runners-up. In the 2020-21 season, they once again came second.

The DFB-Pokal is the first major trophy that RB Leipzig earned in the 2021-22 season. They played the final match against SC Freiburg last season, and the match remained 1-1 for 120 minutes. Christopher Nkunku scored the only goal of the match for Leipzig. The match went to penalties, which the team won 4-2.

This season they played against Eintracht Frankfurt in the final. Frankfurt have played quite well in the past few seasons in Germany. The first half remained goalless with both teams creating fewer chances.

They began the second half with more momentum and possession of the ball. Christopher Nkunku once again broke the deadlock and gave his side the lead in the 71st minute. He then created a goal for Dominik Szoboszlai in the 85th minute. RB Leipzig sealed the match 2-0.

Marco Rose's side defeated Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinals. They were dominant throughout the knockout stages and deserved to win the DFB-Pokal Cup. This is his first trophy as RB Leipzig's manager in just his debut season as a manager for the club. The 46-year-old will look to add more silverware in the coming season.

Eintracht Frankfurt have now played in nine DFB-Pokal finals and won five. They won the cup back in the 2017-18 season. Leipzig were the better team on the day and ended their season on a high.
