The coach needs progressive football as much as possible, reveals Sahal Abdul Samad
The midfielder spoke on his national team experience and expectations in an interaction with the media.
Sahal Abdul Samad was present in a roundtable interaction ahead of India's second SAFF Championship 2023 match against Nepal. The rising star answered questions from the media about the team's preparations and expectations for the upcoming match.
India dominated Pakistan in the opening game, winning comfortably 4-0 in a historic night for Indian football. Sunil Chhetri scored a hat-trick that elevated him to fourth in the all-time international goalscorers list.
Trust and belief from Igor Stimac
With an air of confidence, Sahal expressed his enthusiasm for the moment and emphasized the importance of trust and belief in the coach. "It's important to have trust and belief from the coach, and I'm trying my best and also enjoying the moment,"
Sahal stated, exuding determination and a positive mindset. The midfielder's commitment to the team's success was evident, as he spoke about the need for improvement in every aspect, particularly in his contribution to goals.
Prior meetings with Nepal
Reflecting on the previous encounters with Nepal, Sahal acknowledged their strength as a team and their fearlessness. "Yes, we have already played against them previously, and yeah, we had a previous session with them. They are a good side, they can fight, and they are fearless. We are ready for that match," Sahal affirmed, displaying respect for their opponents.
Sahal expressed his desire to contribute more goals to the team, recognizing the need for improvement in that aspect. He said, "I think every aspect has room for improvement, and mainly, I think I have to start contributing goals."
No pressure of being defending champions
Defending the trophy in the SAFF Championship is undoubtedly a challenging task. However, Sahal emphasized that there is no pressure on the team, thanks to the collective experience and talent within the squad. He mentioned, "The most difficult part is to defend the trophy, but there is no pressure at all because we have a good bunch of players, and everyone has the experience. Young talents are coming up."
Regarding the team's playing style, Sahal highlighted their emphasis on possession-based football. He stated, "You all know we are trying the possession game, trying to hold the ball as much as we can from the wing and the center and make it a chance to score goals. We have fantastic players who score goals for us."
Need for sharing of goals
Acknowledging that Sunil Chhetri was often the main goal scorer for the team, Sahal mentioned that the coach has asked them to change that dependency. He explained, "Coach asked us to change that. We need to start scoring goals not just with one player, (obviously referring to Sunil Chhetri). We are happy to have him, and we have started the process. It will not change suddenly, but I think in the upcoming years, we can expect a change from the team, and currently, we are really happy with the way we are going."
When asked about the advice he received from captain Sunil Chhetri, Sahal emphasized that Chhetri guides all players, irrespective of their experience or age. He said, "He advised every player; there is no particular player. He always encourages the players, even if it's a youngster or maybe even Gurpreet Singh. He's always there for everyone."
Playing alongside Chhetri
Discussing the instructions he receives from the coach when he gets the ball, Sahal highlighted the importance of progressive football. He explained, "The coach needs progressive football as much as possible, to move forward and try to score goals." Sahal explained, indicating the team's attacking approach.
Speaking about his experience playing alongside Sunil Chhetri, Sahal expressed his admiration and gratitude. He stated, "It's amazing! I have learned many things from him regarding professionalism. In every aspect, he is the best example. I'm really happy to be here with him, and I hope I can play with him for many more years."
Differences in ISL and national team roles
Having experience in both the Indian Super League (ISL) with Kerala Blasters and the national team, Sahal was asked about the difference in his positions. He responded, "I started my career with Kerala Blasters in an attacking midfielder position, and now with the national team. Both coaches know how to use me better."
As the press conference concluded, Sahal's words resonated with the determination and confidence of the Indian national team. With trust, belief, and a desire for improvement, they eagerly awaited their clash against Nepal in the SAFF Championship, aiming to showcase their abilities on the field and emerge victorious.
