Analyzing Jude Bellingham's playing time before turning 20 in comparison with other English stars

The workload on the midfielder is a cause for worry amongst the advocates of footballers’ physical and mental health.

Jude Bellingham is close to completing a sensational move to Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund. The English superstar will cost the LaLiga giants over €100 million plus bonuses. It is worth noting that the 19-year-old is one of the most sought-after footballers in the world and the move is making shockwaves around the footballing sphere.

As the midfielder prepares to sign a six-year contract with Real Madrid, a lot of football experts and advocates of mental and physical health for footballers have brought his game time into the spotlight.

Jude Bellingham played an incredible amount of football before turning 20. In comparison, he leaves a lot of high-profile English players behind who went on to play for huge clubs and chart long successful careers. Here is a look at the data that suggests Bellingham’s workload is extreme and it may have long-term effects on his performance in the future:

The towering workload

Jude Bellingham played over 14,445 minutes of football before turning 20 years old. He played in 42 matches for Borussia Dortmund across all competitions, scoring 14 goals and making seven assists last season. During the 2022-23 season alone, he clocked 3,557 minutes of playing time in club football.

The 19-year-old, who is set to turn 20 on June 29 has already played 177 official matches for Birmingham City and Borussia Dortmund combined, for a box-to-box midfielder who relies on his industry and effort, every game is extremely taxing. The ever-increasing number of games in the football calendar is doing more harm than good.

In addition, Bellingham has 24 caps for the England senior national team already. He started all of England’s matches at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

According to a FIFPRO report, the relentless football fixture list is damaging the physical and mental health of players. Looking at other high-profile English players and their gametime before turning 20 shows just how much football Bellingham is playing for club and country.

Comparison with major English stars

Wayne Rooney, the former Manchester United player and club legend played 10,989 minutes of football before turning 20. Due to the effects of work overload, Rooney had to shift to a deeper role in midfield in the latter part of his career after losing his natural pace and stamina. Michael Owen is next with 9187 minutes of game time as a teenager.

Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford broke through the academy ranks at an early age, making his debut for the senior team when he was only 18 years 03 months 28 days old. The forward has been a mainstay at MUFC since then and even he has played 5936 minutes of football, way less than Jude Bellingham.

Other major English talents who went on to have long football careers played extremely less in their teenage years. Frank Lampard and David Beckham played only 3477 and 829 minutes of football before turning 20.

The reports suggest that Jude Bellingham is playing way more football than some of the high-profile players in the past and present. The extreme teenage workload may have adverse effects on his physical and mental health. That may prevent him from enjoying a long football career which is a major concern. It is a matter of time for injuries to catch up if Jude Bellingham continues to play a huge amount of football.
