The Spanish defender led Chelsea to the 2020-21 Champions League title

César Azpilicueta has agreed personal terms with Inter Milan and is set to sign a two-year contract, as Chelsea will terminate his contract.

The 33-year-old inked an additional two years of contract at Stamford Bridge in 2022 after it became known that he would return to Spain, and that agreement is slated to expire in 2024.

Barcelona were 'closing in' on their agreement to recruit the full-back, but negotiations broke down when the cash-strapped LaLiga giants refused to meet Chelsea's £7 million asking price.

According to reports, co-owner Todd Boehly 'blocked his departure to Barcelona' because Chelsea did not want to lose one of their key leaders after their recent £600 million player spending spree.

Cesar Azpilicueta, who moved to London from Marseille in 2012, has since scored 17 goals in 508 games across all competitions for the Blues.

Thomas Tuchel was particularly fond of him, and he made 80 appearances when the German was in charge of the team.

With Benjamin Pavard possibly leaving the club this summer, Bayern Munich were apparently trying to upgrade their right-back ranks.

The Blues have already been involved in the transfer market; earlier this week, they announced the £53 million acquisition of Christopher Nkunku.

Considering Kalidou Koulibaly, a former defender for Napoli, are reportedly close to leaving the club for Saudi Arabia, the Blues may also be bound to acquire a new defender.
