He will now play in the MLS

Lionel Messi has revealed that he has already played his final FIFA World Cup match, just days before finalising and confirming his record-breaking deal and transfer to Inter Miami. He stated on Tuesday that he will not be wearing the Argentina jersey at the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

In his fifth WC participation, Messi guided La Albiceleste to victory in December of last year. Argentina won their third World Cup and had not done so since the illustrious Diego Maradona hoisted the cup in 1986. Their first victory occurred in 1978.

Leo had in fact previously stated that the WC in Qatar was going to be his last competition, but supporters, teammates, and head coach Lionel Scaloni remained optimistic for a shift of heart that might see their most capped player and top goal scorer qualify for the 2026 competition to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The 35-year-old is at the moment in China for an international match between Argentina and China, where he will play Australia on Thursday and Indonesia on Monday.

When questioned about the 2026 tournament, Messi told Chinese sports publication Titan Sports that he would be participating in the World Cup:

"I think not. [Qatar] was my last World Cup. I'll see how things go, but as it is right now, no, I won't go to the next World Cup."

Lionel Messi seems to have completed his career in Europe and will start his next voyage in the United States, where he will represent Inter Miami, although his move to Miami came as a surprise given the 35-year-old still has a few years left to play at the top level following a productive season at the club and national level.
