Manchester City agree £30m deal for Chelsea's Mateo Kovacic

The Croatian midfielder won a Champions League and Europa League with the Blues

Mateo Kovacic is almost close to joining Manchester City after City agreed to a contract with Chelsea valued up to £30 million.

The 29-year-old midfielder from Croatia is expected to sign a £25 million deal with the Premier League winners, with a 5 £million option for add-ons.

As they try to pare down their enormous team for new boss Mauricio Pochettino, the Blues are still selling players.

N'Golo Kante, a fellow midfielder, is also leaving the team after deciding to join Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. Kovacic joined Chelsea from Real Madrid in 2019, initially on loan before agreeing to a five-year deal.

Ilkay Gundogan's future at Manchester City will be further questioned by Kovacic's arrival given that his contract is soon to expire.

During Chelsea's tumultuous season in which they hired three managers before ending 12th in the Premier League, Kovacic played 37 matches across all competitions.

He was a member of the Chelsea team that defeated City 1-0 in the Champions League final in 2021 and entered the game as a late substitute.

Kovacic has played every match in 95 outings for Croatia at the international level, helping them finish third in the 2022 World Cup.

At the pinnacle of his game right now, Kovacic will try to provide Manchester City with exceptional football in the upcoming seasons.

For the Premier League heavyweights, the 29-year-old might turn out to be a steal, especially at the purported £30 million asking price.
