Three players won the Golden Boot in their respective leagues

In today's generation, more and more players are emerging with high goalscoring records and stats. There are some, like Neymar, Robert Lewandowski, Luis Suarez, and many more, who have been scoring goals consistently each season. Then there are Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who have scored almost 30 goals each season for numerous years.

After each season ends, the goal tally of each player for his club and country is calculated. This has had quite an impact on various awards, especially the Ballon. Since the 2022–23 football season is over, let's take a look at the top five players with the most goals for club and country.

5. Robert Lewandowski - 35 (Poland and Barcelona)

Inarguably one of the best strikers of our generation. Robert Lewandowski absolutely smashed all of the records in the Bundesliga when he was playing for Bayern Munich. His goal record of 344 goals and 72 assists for Bayern Munich speaks a lot about his dominance. Lewandowski showed that he can do it in Europe as well, scoring 91 goals in the UEFA Champions League.

The 32-year-old striker then wanted a new challenge, so he proceeded to join Barcelona. Lewandowski surpassed his expectations, scoring 33 goals for Barcelona across all competitions. He managed to win the Pichichi (LaLiga top scorer) as well, scoring 23 goals in the league.

4. Lionel Messi - 38 (Argentina and PSG)

Lionel Messi is still managing to score consistently at the age of 356. Lionel has scored 21 goals for PSG and an astounding 17 goals for Argentina in the 2022–23 season. On paper, it looks quite normal for Messi, but let's take a deeper look into it.

Messi struggled to score in his initial season at PSG, scoring only six goals. Despite Neymar Jr. and Mbappe facing injuries, the 36-year-old carried the goalscoring load for some time. His 21 goals in the 2022–23 season include a last-minute winner and a title-deciding goal as well.

Finally, after years and years of struggling with Argentina, Messi made progress, winning the Copa America in 2021. However, that was just the beginning, as Messi's World Cup woes also ended. Messi scored seven goals for Argentina in the FIFA World Cup, including a goal in the finals as well. Overall, he scored 17 goals for Argentina in the 2022–23 season.

3. Harry Kane - 40 (England and Tottenham Hotspur)

Tottenham Hotspur were inconsistent this season. This has been their case for many years, as they have failed to win any piece of silverware. However, their two saviours, Harry Kane and Son Heung Min, have stayed with them despite the odds. Let's talk about Harry Kane.

England's captain has managed to score eight goals for his country and 32 goals for Spurs. What's astounding is that despite Tottenham Hotspur's struggle this season, the 29-year-old striker has managed to score 30 goals in the Premier League.

2. Kylian Mbappe - 54 (France and PSG)

Already one of the best players of today's footballing generation. Kylian Mbappe has put up crazy numbers consistently for PSG ever since joining them. Speaking particularly about the 2022–23 season, Mbappe scored 29 goals in 34 league appearances and seven goals in eight UCL appearances for PSG.

Mbappe's most impressive performance was in the FIFA World Cup, especially in the finals. The 24-year-old scored a hat-trick against Argentina in the finals and almost single-handedly won France the World Cup as well. Unfortunately, Kylian Mbappe is not the best contender to win the Ballon d'Or this season since he has not won the World Cup or the UCL.

1. Erling Haaland - 56 (Norway and Manchester City)

The only rival to Kylian Mbappe's new era of dominance, Erling Haaland, was bound to become the best goalscoring machine as soon as he joined Manchester City. The Norwegian scored 36 Premier League goals in 38 appearances. He scored six hat-tricks in the 2022–23 season, including four in the Premier League. Erling scored 12 goals in 11 UEFA Champions League appearances and was a key player in City's winning campaign.

The 22-year-old scored four goals for his country, and that too in a qualifier, but that gave him the edge he needed to go past Mbappe.

Overall, Erling Haaland played a crucial role in Manchester City's treble-winning campaign.
