Romelu Lukaku faces racial abuse following Champions League defeat

He is currently on loan from Chelsea

Romelu Lukaku came on as a substitute in the second half, hoping to turn around the fixture, but instead the 29-year-old experienced an embarrassing game and was later subjected to racism.

The on-loan Chelsea forward had a forgettable cameo after blocking Federico Dimarco's header in front of the goal and then creating a fantastic opportunity for himself with his head before shooting directly at Ederson from close range.

Whatever transpired on the pitch, however, the abhorrent racist abuse he received on Instagram is wholly inexcusable, with vile responses flooding in on his latest post.

Sadly, Romelu Lukaku already talked about racial abuse when he experienced it in the Inter Milan vs. Juventus match in the Coppa Italia.

While many users on Saturday night condemned the racist remarks, there were also some frightening posts, such as the ones below.

In an interview with The Mirror, Romelu Lukaku discussed the persistent issues in football and argued that, as in Belgium, changes must be made at the highest levels of clubs, nations, and the game.

‘'I think you need more diversity in positions of power, at the top,’ he said. ‘That’s where you need to start, that’s where we need to have diversity. People of colour, put them in the top of every boardroom. And that’s when the change will start."

‘'That’s why, for example, in our Belgian federation, that’s where they started, they’re trying to put in people of colour, different sexualities and stuff like that."

‘'So that every situation that can happen, whether it is racial or any other form or type of discrimination, can be attacked straight away. If you put people of different colour in positions of power, I think things would get taken care of much faster than now.’'
