Al-Ittihad won the league this season

In a bid to elevate its footballing reputation and secure the hosting rights for the 2030 World Cup, Saudi Arabia has emerged as a destination determined to lure some of the biggest names in football. The recent high-profile signings of Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo by Saudi clubs have catapulted the Saudi Pro League into the spotlight, signalling the league's ambition to become a global force.

Benzema bid farewell to Real Madrid to join the ranks of Al-Ittihad and is ready to make an impact on Saudi Arabian soil. The French international's unveiling showcased the financial powerhouses at play, with reports suggesting a staggering €200 million per season contract. This move is just a glimpse of the grand ambitions that Saudi Arabia harbours for its Pro League as it seeks to attract other marquee signings and solidify its place on the global football map.

The Saudi Pro League has become the latest hotbed for top-tier talent, following a trend reminiscent of the Chinese Super League's golden era. With notable players like Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and N'Golo Kante reportedly being courted by clubs such as Al-Hilal and Al Ittihad, the league is leaving no stone unturned in its pursuit of securing star-studded lineups. And if Messi moves in, for the first time after 2018, all three of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and Lionel Messi will play in the same league.

As the Saudi Pro League prepares to host a potential constellation of football luminaries, let's uncover the top five teams that have already etched their names in Saudi Arabian football history with a record number of championship titles.

5. Al-Ahli SFC - 3 titles

With three Saudi Pro League titles to their name, Al-Ahli SFC has solidified its place among the elite teams in the country. Known for its passionate fan base and competitive spirit, Al-Ahli has been a consistent contender for the championship, leaving an indelible mark on Saudi football. Built in 2014, King Abdullah Sports City hosts the home games for the Royals. Their recent league success came in 2015-16, while the other two happened in the 1977-78 and 1983-84 seasons.

4. Al-Shabab FC - 6 titles

Al-Shabab FC finished fourth in the 2022-23 season. But the club founded in 1947 has enjoyed several trophies in the Saudi Pro League, clinching the title on six occasions. The White Lions wear their home kits at the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium in Riyadh. Their strong performance over the years has earned them a well-deserved reputation as one of the top teams in the league. In the 21st century, Al-Shabab lifted the title across the 2011-12, 2005-06, and 2003-04 seasons.

3. Al-Nassr FC - 9 titles

Al-Nassr will be remembered as the pioneer in shaping the Saudi Pro League. In whatever progressive direction the league is heading by bringing in Europe's finest. The side made history by announcing that global superstar Cristiano Ronaldo signed for them on  December 31, 2022. The Knights of Najd boast an impressive record of nine Saudi Pro League titles, highlighting their dominance in Saudi football. After 2010, they won the league three times, notably in 2018-19, 2014-15, and 2013-14. The club's strong squad, rich history, and dedicated fan base have contributed to making it a formidable opponent for any team that crosses its path.

2. Al-Ittihad Club - 9 titles

Al-Ittihad Club's recent acquisition of Real Madrid's number 9 comes after winning the 2022-23 Saudi Pro League title. Renowned for their passionate supporters and relentless drive, Al-Ittihad has consistently challenged for the top spot, showcasing their determination to maintain their position among the league's elite.

If we account only for the 21st century, Al-Ittihad have been more successful in the domestic league than Ronaldo's Al-Nassr. The Tigers took home the trophy a total of five times, while Al-Nassr managed just three. In the years 2022-23, 2008-09, 2006-07, 2002-03, and 2000-01, they added five titles to their previously acquired four trophies.

1. Al-Hilal SFC - 18 titles

At the summit of Saudi football, with an astonishing 18 championship titles, stands Al-Hilal SFC. The most successful team in the history of the Saudi Pro League has set a benchmark of excellence for other teams to aspire to.
