Want to build a team that's sustainable & consistent, says new JFC coach Scott Cooper

Scott Cooper also revealed why he said yes to Jamshedpur FC.

Irish-English manager Scott Cooper has finally taken the hot seat, as it was earlier revealed by Khel Now in April. The manager comes in with a lot of experience, having coached in top Asian clubs like Buriram United and others. However, the challenge here in India will be different.

As Cooper takes charge, he'll have to look back at the last two seasons Jamshedpur FC had. The first — where the club were crowned ISL Shield champions under the tutelage of Owen Coyle. Then comes the second — under the leadership of former England youth team manager Aidy Boothroyd, Jamshedpur finished 10th in a 11-team league.

Such disparity might have shocked Scott Cooper, but it was the management's task to ensure that he learns about the situation at the club and what they're going to do in the nearby future.

Just a day after his appointment as the new Jamshedpur FC mentor, Cooper sat down with Khel Now for an interview. Here are the excwrpts from the interaction.

Why did you sign for Jamshedpur FC?

Yes. That was the first question thrown at him. Downfalls are usually gradual, but in case of Jamshedpur FC, with almost a similar squad that won the Championship, they finished second-last. Luckily, the Indian Super League is yet to introduce a promotion-relegation system, else it would have been a nightmare for the club.

However, Scott Cooper is very optimistic. He says, "After meeting key people and listening to their vision for the club, it became apparent that we are very much aligned in the thought process. I’m also a Steel City boy and that played some emotional connection too."

The upcoming Jamshedpur FC project

Football is nowadays project based, and a solitary successful season doesn't play a part in the same. A route of gradual elevation is what is mainly the plan. The new Jamshedpur FC tactician shared his project too.

"Well any coach must look at two aspects: winning and developing players. We have to make sure these two elements are alive and well. It’s a matter of building a team that’s sustainable in terms of consistency, the club and the team needs that, consistency is the key now for the team."

He added, "So we are looking to play in a way that fits the club and players that match that. A method that is identifiable that players and coaches at all ages in the club can relate to."

More youngsters at disposal?

As Khel Now had mentioned in Scott Cooper's profile, the manager is a master is nurturing raw talents. He can identify many future stars if given the proper support.

Cooper shared his ambition, "You can expect youngsters who are showing the signs to be given opportunities, yes. If you are good enough, you are old enough. There is nothing better for fans than witnessing a home and young developed player coming through."

What can fans expect?

Scott Cooper concluded by mentioning what the fans can expect from his team.

"They can expect passion, hard work, transparency and above all: a way of playing that they will enjoy."
