Jordan Henderson could end his long spell at Liverpool if he agrees to leave Liverpool

According to rumours, Jordan Henderson, the captain of Liverpool, is in "very advanced" negotiations with Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq.

Despite making 43 outings for the Reds in all competitions in 2022–23, particularly 35 in the Premier League, the addition of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai means that 33-year-old Henderson will have more competition this season.

With the £95 million investment, Liverpool's midfield renovation may not be complete either. According to reports, Jurgen Klopp and the club leadership are looking for a new "number 6" after being closely associated with Southampton's Romeo Lavia recently.

As an outcome, there is speculation that the team may attempt to dump players before investing in new ones. Thiago, Fabinho, and Henderson, a trio of veteran midfielders for Liverpool, are seen among the most probable candidates.

According to Loic Tanzi of L'Equipe, Steven Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq are currently trying to persuade "several European stars," including Henderson, to join them in the Saudi Pro League.

Henderson and Gerrard have been linked in recent days, but it's not the first time. Last week, 90min was among several to suggest that Gerrard had inquired about Henderson and Philippe Coutinho, the latter of whom seemed like a more likely deal.

Theoretically, a transfer may benefit Liverpool, which are aiming to reduce its pay bill, as well as Henderson, whose playing time will be reduced in 2023–24.

However, a deal would be quite unexpected given the player's availability, importance in the locker room, and status as one of the club's captains.

Thiago, who has been connected with teams in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, appears to be a more likely option if the Reds decide to transfer an older player because of his hefty salaries and injury history.
