LaLiga will not use Goal line technology in 2023-24 season

The Spanish top flight will continue to be the only major European league without "goal-line technology."

President Javier Tebas of LaLiga is apparently opposed to the change because it would be "too expensive." As a result, LaLiga will continue to be the only major European league without "goal-line technology."

The technology is used by the Eredivisie, the Championship, and the other two main European leagues (the Bundesliga, Premier League, Serie A, and Ligue 1).

Frank Lampard's infamously overturned goal over Germany at the 2010 World Cup spurred the modification, which was initially implemented in the English top division nine years ago. By 2015, leagues in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands had also adopted it.

Multiple cameras are placed around the goal to help the system determine whether or not the ball has gone over the line. An electronic watch then notifies the referee as to if or not the football has done so.

El Larguero reports that Tebas is hesitant to pay the '£2.6 million' it would take to make the necessary improvements, therefore Spain appears to be without the technology for another season.

Despite Atletico Madrid's contentious 3-3 draw with Espanyol last season, which demonstrated how valuable technology can be, this development still occurs.

Against a team fighting for relegation, Atleti quickly took a 3-0 lead, however, it was unsure if the second goal was over the finish line.

LaLiga employs VAR, but without the proper camera setup for goalline technology, the strike wasn't able to be disallowed and was awarded.

After a remarkable comeback, Espanyol tied the score at 3-3, potentially losing two points as a result of the lack of technology.

After the game, the team issued a statement asking for the outcome to be "nullified" because of Grizemann's goal position.
