Morocco beat Egypt 2-1 to lift the trophy

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) organises the quadrennial U-23 Africa Cup of Nations for its male national teams, which are made up of players under the age of 23.

This was the tournament's fourth iteration. The event took place in Morocco from June 24 to July 8, 2023. Morocco served as the event's second host after serving as the competition's first in 2011.

The competition's finalist teams and third-place playoff winner earned spots in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Men's Football Tournament, while the fourth-place team will compete in the AFC-CAF playoff to determine the final Olympic spot.

The defending champions, Egypt, were defeated 2-1 by the host team, Morocco, in the championship game.

After beating Egypt in the championship game contested in Rabat on Saturday, the Baby Lions were crowned the TotalEnergies U23 AFCON winners.

The host nation continued its winning record after defeating Guinea (2-1), Ghana (5-1), and Congo Brazzaville (1-0) throughout the group stage. The final saw them triumph 2-1 over a 10-man Egypt team.

They defeated Mali in the semifinals in an exciting penalty shootout, winning 4-3 after a 2-2 tie.

The coach emphasised that the team's success was the consequence of discipline and unrelenting focus rather than a lucky break.

In addition to advising his team to enjoy their success, Charai also emphasised the challenging work that still needs to be done in order to get ready for the Paris Olympics in 2024.
