Spain and Italy are most dominant sides in the tournament's history

The European men's under-21 squads of the UEFA member institutions compete in the biannual UEFA European Under-21 Championship, sometimes known as the UEFA Under-21 Championship or merely the U-21 Euro. The event has also served as the UEFA qualifying round for the Summer Olympics since 1992.

With five titles each, Italy and Spain are among the most dominant sides in this competition. Germany currently holds the title after defeating Portugal 1-0 in the 2021 championship game.

Since 1978, the tournament has operated in its current format. The Under-23 Challenge Cup, which was played from 1967 to 1970, came before it. Two teams were chosen at random from among the teams who submitted applications for the event.

The outcome of the match between these teams determined who would take home the primary trophy. The winning club had to play with him on the following meeting's roster.

Starting with the fourth competition, these contests were only ever played twice a year, in the spring and the fall. If more than one team contested the championship, the order of rivals was chosen at random. The cup holder was permitted to engage in home entertainment.

That trophy was only held by Bulgaria and Yugoslavia. The European Youth Tournament took its place as the competition's replacement in 1970.
