FIFA Women's World Cup 2023: France captain Wendie Renard sidelined for crucial encounter against Brazil

The centre-back suffered a knock in the previous game

Based on an article from this Wednesday's L'Équipe, France captain Wendie Renard (33) is expected to miss Les Bleues' Women's World Cup Group F matchup against Brazil.

Last Sunday's opening 0-0 stalemate between the French women and Jamaica resulted in a knock for the 33-year-old Olympique Lyonnais centre-back.

The French publication also notes that Renard's fitness is a matter of secrecy for the France team. Le Progrès is aware that the OL defender will be sidelined for the remaining games of the group stage due to a thigh issue at the moment.

After multiple key players, including centre-back Griedge Mbock (dislocated knee), winger Delphine Cascarino (torn ACL), free-scoring forward Marie-Antoinette Katoto (ACL), and seasoned midfielder Amandine Henry (thigh damage) prior to the World Cup, suffered injuries, it could be another tragic blow for France.

According to L'Équipe, Hervé Renard, the manager of France, will likely change up his lineup in their next match. Elisa De Almeida will take the place of Renard when they face the Brazilians in lieu of Malle Lakrar, who began right back facing Jamaica.

On Saturday in Brisbane, Marta's team will compete against Les Bleues. Losing would make it more difficult for France to get to the knockout rounds.

Wendie Renard made her debut for her country back in 2011. Since then, the 33-year-old has made 146 appearances and scored 36 goals for the French national team.

She has also represented her country at the U19 and U20 levels.

The 33-year-old started her career at Lyon in 2006 and has made 284 appearances for the Les Lyonnaises. She is an experienced centre-back and will be a big miss against the South American opponents.
