The Group E of Durand Cup comprises one Armed Forces team as well!

The highly esteemed Durand Cup 2023 is poised to commence from tomorrow. Recognized as one of the oldest football tournaments in Asia, this prestigious event is slated to unfold from August 3 to September 3, spanning across three vibrant cities, namely Kolkata, Guwahati, and Kokrajhar.

Notably, the upcoming edition of the Durand Cup stands apart as it signifies the tournament’s expansion to encompass 24 teams, strategically organized into six groups, each comprising four teams.

Group E will witness two ISL (Indian Super League) teams, namely Chennaiyin FC and Hyderabad FC, who will also be joined by new I-League entrants Delhi FC and Tribhuvan Army Club from Nepal.

Strengths

Tribhuvan Army team remains a relatively obscure entity for the Indian football community, which could potentially serve as an advantage for them. It will be intriguing to witness their performance against formidable opponents from the prestigious Indian Super League. As one of the two foreign armed forces teams participating in the tournament, they will undoubtedly attract significant attention and scrutiny.

Chennaiyin FC, a team that reached the quarter-finals in the previous edition of the Durand Cup, have reappointed Owen Coyle as their head coach, which will surely enhance the team’s performance in the upcoming tournament. Coyle’s previous tenure with the two-time ISL champions in the 2019-20 season was marked by remarkable success. The Scottish tactician orchestrated a remarkable turnaround, propelling Chennaiyin FC from a lower standing to the final match that season. With his return, optimism abounds for a renewed charge towards glory under his astute leadership.

Hyderabad FC will enter the Durand Cup with several strengths that can contribute to their success in the tournament. One of their key advantages is their strong and well-structured defence, which has the ability to frustrate opponents and prevent them from scoring goals. Additionally, Hyderabad FC boast a talented midfield that can effectively control the flow of the game, provide precise passes, and create scoring opportunities. They also possess skilled forwards who have the capability to find the back of the net and make a significant impact on the outcome of matches.

In anticipation of their forthcoming campaign, Delhi FC have been actively engaged in the transfer market, securing the services of several noteworthy players. Among the notable signings are Naorem Tondomba Singh, Vinil Poojary, Girik Khosla, Raju Gaikwad and Azharuddin Mallick amongst others. These recent acquisitions have significantly bolstered the roster of Delhi FC, infusing them with a wealth of experience and commendable leadership qualities.

Weaknesses

Tribhuvan Army may be perceived as the least formidable team in their group; however, they possess an air of mystery to their competitors. While they are set to face the highly disciplined ISL teams, it is plausible that they could spring surprises with their commendable performances.

In recent seasons, Chennaiyin FC have encountered challenges in maintaining a consistent level of performance. This inconsistency can impede their ability to establish a steady rhythm and secure favourable outcomes. The team has at times encountered difficulties in capitalizing on scoring opportunities, which can place them at a disadvantage when facing opponents with potent offensive capabilities. Furthermore, Chennaiyin FC have occasionally exhibited vulnerability in conceding goals from set-pieces. This aspect may be exploited by opposing teams seeking to gain an upper hand in matches.

Under the guidance of a newly-appointed coaching consortium, consisting of first team coach Conor Nestor, first team head coach Thangboi Singto, and assistant coach Shameel Chembakath, Hyderabad FC find themselves amidst a period of significant transformation. The resolution to part ways with pivotal players who played a crucial role in their previous accomplishments, alongside the departure of head coach Manolo Marquez, raises uncertainties regarding the team’s future. Therefore, Hyderabad FC is now confronted with the formidable challenge of rebuilding from scratch. Only time will unveil whether they can effectively reconstruct the squad and reclaim their former eminence.

Delhi FC have struggled at times when defending set-pieces, such as corners and free-kicks. Their weakness in this area could be exploited by opponents with accurate delivery and strong aerial presence, thus requiring enhanced vigilance and organisation. They may also face challenges in terms of squad depth, which could strain their resources over the course of a demanding tournament. Injuries or suspensions to key players may impact their performance, requiring careful management and utilization of available resources.

Favourites to qualify

Despite the lacklustre performances and discussions surrounding Chennaiyin FC in the previous ISL season, the team emerges as a strong contender for the top position within their group. Under the leadership of Owen Coyle, the team is determined to achieve optimal results in the upcoming tournament.

Underdog to qualify

Delhi FC are the dark horse in the group and a sure threat for the ISL teams. If they play to their strength, the club might acquire the second position in the group. And who knows, a certain turnaround might see them at the top.
