Some big names have been eliminated in the group stage
The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 has reached the knockout stage. 16 teams have been eliminated from the group stage, and the remaining ones will play in the Round of 16 starting tomorrow.
This is the ninth edition of the Women’s World Cup, which is being held in Australia and New Zealand. The Matildas are through to the knockout stage, but the Football Ferns’ journey came to an end.
There were a few other upsets in the group stage, as Canada was unable to make it through from Group B. They are ranked seventh in the world.
The biggest upset in the group stage came on the last day. Two-time champions and second-seeded Germany failed to make it to the last 16. Brazil also suffered heartbreak in the group stage.
Morocco Women made history by making it to the knockout stage in their first appearance in the World Cup. South Africa and Jamaica were the other teams who made it to the last 16 for the first time.
Group C winners Japan had the best record in the initial stage of completion. They had a 100% record and scored 11 goals. Japan also kept three clean sheets in the group stage. Hinata Miyawaza is the joint-highest goal scorer in the tournament, along with Alexandra Popp of Germany. The 24-year-old Japanese midfielder will look to add more goals to her tally.
Lauren James (England) and Mina Tanaka (Japan) have provided three assists each in the competition.
Sweden vs USA will be the biggest match in the Round of 16. The USWNT are the defending champions and will look for their third consecutive title. Sweden has never won the competition and finished as runners-up in 2003. The USA finished second in the group and haven’t been at their best.
