In a thrilling development for football fans in India, the prestigious King’s Cup tournament is set to be live streamed on FIFA+ and televised on Eurosport, All India Football Federation (AIFF) the country’s football governing body announced on 5 September, Tuesday.
History of King’s Cup and how have India fared previously
The King’s Cup, or “Kor Royal Cup” in Thai, is a prestigious international football tournament hosted annually in Thailand. It has a rich history and is closely associated with the Thai monarchy. The King’s Cup, an annual international football tournament hosted in Thailand since its inception in 1968, has consistently showcased top-notch football talent from around the world. Hosts Thailand have played a pivotal role in every edition of this prestigious event.
The upcoming edition of the King’s Cup will mark the fourth appearance of the Indian national football team in this esteemed competition. Their previous participation in 2019 saw them reach the semi-finals, where they narrowly lost to Curaçao. However, the Indian team bounced back with a remarkable performance by defeating hosts Thailand, with a 1-0 scoreline, to secure the bronze medal.
India’s debut appearance in the King’s Cup took place in 1977, a historic moment when they clinched the bronze medal. They achieved this feat by triumphing over formidable opponents like the Republic of Korea, Singapore, and Indonesia. In 1981, India returned to the tournament but faced elimination during the group stage.

In the most recent edition held in 2022, Tajikistan emerged as the champions of the King’s Cup. They clinched the title after a thrilling final where they outwitted Malaysia. Thailand, in front of their passionate home crowd, secured third place by defeating Trinidad and Tobago with a hard-fought 2-1 scoreline.
King’s Cup 2023
This edition of the King’s Cup will see India square off against Asian powerhouse Iraq in a knockout semi-final clash. Whereas, hosts Thailand will be up against Lebanon. The winners from both the games will play the final and the losers of the semi-final clash will play a bronze medal 3rd place game.
All the games will be played in Chiang Mai city’s 700th Anniversary Stadium in Thailand.
