Angel Di Maria set to announce international retirement after Copa America 2024

The Argentine winger led his country to the FIFA World Cup 2022 title

Argentina's forward Angel Di Maria is set to retire after playing the Copa America in 2024. According to ESPN, the 35-year-old will quit international football.

Angel Di Maria is one of the longest servants in Argentina's football history. The forward made his international debut in 2008 and has earned 132 caps for the national team.

He has been a part of four World Cup campaigns for his nation and ended with the trophy in the recently concluded 2022 edition.

Diego Maradona was the manager of Argentina in 2010 and he picked Benfica's emerging talent. This was a breakthrough season for Di Maria as Real Madrid came in to purchase him after the completion of the competition.

The 2014 edition was a heartbreak as Argentina lost to Germany in the final. The 2018 edition also ended in a heartbreak for the forward.

Di Maria had already won the Olympic Gold Medal in 2008 but was in search of his first major trophy. In 2021, Argentinian and Di Maria ended their trophy draught and won the Copa America. This was also the first international trophy for Lionel Messi.

The Argentinians then went on to win the FIFA World Cup in Qatar and ended their decades-long wait for the trophy.

The 35-year-old has scored 29 times for his nation. He returned to his former club Benfica in 2023. Di Maria has played for the likes of Rosario Central, Real Madrid, Machester United, PSG and Juventus.

He won the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid in 2013-14 and the league title as well. The forward won five league titles in France.

The Copa America 2024 is scheduled to take place in June next year. Di Maria will look for a fairytale ending with the national squad.
