Brazilian has been accused of domestic violence

The winger for Manchester United, Antony, has taken a flight back to the UK in order to appear before the police to answer charges of assault and battery against a female.

To help the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) with their inquiry into the complaints brought by the footballer's former partner Gabriela Cavallin, Antony gave permission to turn over his cell phone to the GMP.

Cavallini, who dated Antony for a period of two years, reported the Brazilian athlete's alleged "physical and mental abuse" to the GMP and So Paulo police earlier this month.

Ingrid Lana and Rayssa de Freitas then made additional assault claims, with Lana's concerns referring to an encounter the two had in Manchester. In an interview with Brazilian TV, Antony refuted every accusation.

The 23-year-old took a flight on Tuesday back to England from Brazil, where police stated they didn't require any more details from him after an unannounced interview they had there in June. He recently consented to have meetings with GMP freely.

In order to respond to the charges, Antony agreed to take a "period of absence" from Manchester United earlier this month. This meant he would not participate in practice sessions or games until further notice. He is still unlikely to be chosen despite having returned to the UK.

At the time, a club statement read: “Manchester United acknowledges the allegations made against Antony. It has been agreed with Antony that he will delay his return until further notice in order to address the allegations.

As a club we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognise the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation, and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse.”
