AS Roma consider January loan move for Eric Dier

Eric Dier is not in Ange Postecoglou's plans

Eric Dier, a defender for Tottenham Hotspur, is supposedly a target for Roma. Dier's career in North London is presently up in the air because his contract is slated to expire at the conclusion of this season's campaign.

The summer transfer window saw rumours of a transfer for the England international, but nothing came of it.

Dier hasn't played for Tottenham under manager Ange Postecoglou since he has dropped down the hierarchy this year.

With the additions of youngster Ashley Phillips from Blackburn Rovers and Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg, Spurs bolstered their defence over the summer.

Van de Ven and Cristian Romero have been Postecoglou's first-choice central defensive pairing in the early going of this season.

Dier has started the last two games on the bench after missing the first four matchday squads of the Premier League season.

The 29-year-old remains impatient for his first season-opening appearance, and getting into the lineup may be challenging given Romero and Van de Ven's strong play.

Despite Postecoglou's assurances that Dier remains in his plans, the player might be tempted to go elsewhere for consistent playing time.

Due to Chris Smalling's ongoing injury problems and the summer departure of Roger Ibanez, the Serie A club is looking to strengthen their defence alternatives.

Jose Mourinho, the head coach of Roma, has worked with Dier before and is extremely conscious of the defender's abilities.

Roma are eager to get Dier to Italy, but they have also eyed Oumar Solet of RB Salzburg as a possible replacement. Dier has played in 360 competitive games for Tottenham since he transferred from Sporting Lisbon in 2014.
