Barcelona considering loan move for Giovani Lo Celso in January 2024
Giovani Lo Celso has become a fringe player at Spurs
Giovani Lo Celso, a disgruntled Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, is rumoured to be on Barcelona's radar for a January bombshell move.
Football Insider reports that the 27-year-old, who was on loan from Spurs to play for Villarreal in La Liga this past season, may be on Xavi's side's radar when the recruiting period opens again. Only two appearances have been made by the Argentina international for Tottenham at this point under new manager Ange Postecoglou.
Giovani Lo Celso, who is reportedly available for under £12 million ($14.5 million), has had his playing time reduced due to England international James Maddison's arrival and impressive play. Since his transfer from Real Betis to Tottenham in 2020, he has played a total of 86 matches for the club.
It is currently unknown if Lo Celso can find a place in Spurs manager Postecoglou's plans, despite his team having an undefeated start to the 2023–24 season.
However, because Tottenham's asking price was too high and the Catalans wanted to maintain disciplined financial management, their keenness did not materialise into a bid.
The performance of England's James Maddison, a playmaker, has diminished Lo Celso's place in the first squad of the team, and Spurs are looking to change their stance ahead of the January transfer window.
Ange Postecoglu remains a huge Lo Celso supporter, but the former Villarreal loanee hopes to play frequently in the upcoming months, which will pique Barcelona's interest once more.
The footballer's present deal is worth €14 million, according to Transfermarkt. After his previous move from PSG to Betis for €22 million, Giovani Lo Celso completed the move to Tottenham from Real Betis in 2020 for €32 million.
He has an overall total of 44 appearances for the Argentine national team and has appeared in 56 games for Spurs, netting one goal in that time.
