Chelsea could be forced to sell Ian Maatsen in January transfer window
Maatsen turned down to join Burnley in summer window
Ian Maatsen's position at Chelsea is still up in the air after many failed attempts to lock the defender into a new deal with the team. On the last day of the summer transfer window, Maatsen had the option to sign with Burnley, but he declined when the Blues approved a £31.5 million bid for the full-back.
Apparently, according to the Telegraph, little advancement is being made before the beginning of the month in regards to the Dutch defender and the club coming to an agreement on a new contract.
Because the contract of the 21-year-old is slated to run its course at the conclusion of the current campaign, Chelsea may try to sell him in January if they fail to reach an agreement by the end of the year.
In Chelsea's midweek triumph over Brighton in the third round of the Carabao Cup, Maatsen made his second appearance of the year.
He has proven himself as a crucial element of Mauricio Pochettino's team and has made three replacement outings in the Premier League.
Injuries and suspensions have limited Chelsea's choices at right-back, and there are questions over Marc Cucurella's overtime status at the team. If an extension is reached, Maatsen may be eligible for a greater role in the starting XI.
Following stints in the Netherlands with Feyenoord, Sparta Rotterdam, and PSV Eindhoven, the left-back entered the Chelsea youth programme.
Maatsen played this past season on loan at Vincent Kompany's Burnley after making an impression when playing for Charlton Athletic and Coventry City.
Under the Belgian's guidance, he developed into a key member of the Burnley team that swept to the Championship title and made an immediate return to the Premier League.
Maatsen rejected an opportunity to play in the Premier League once more for the Clarets this year, but his position at Chelsea remains in doubt. The next match for Pochettino's team is a trip to Fulham.
