Erik ten Hag had anticipated to have Mason Greenwood in his squad this season at Manchester United.

Six months after beginning an internal inquiry into the forward following allegations of sexual assault and domestic abuse were dismissed, United ultimately declared their choice over Greenwood's future.

After chief executive Richard Arnold changed his mind about calling for the striker to be reintegrated into the squad in the wake of a significant backlash from fans, the general public, and charities, the club and Greenwood mutually decided that it was optimal for the attacker to keep playing his career elsewhere.

Ten Hag and football manager John Murtough allegedly supported adding Greenwood back to the team. However, during the manager's news conference prior to United's game against Nottingham Forest at home, queries on Greenwood were deflected.

Ten Hag therefore called his team together to discuss the decision's justifications.

The Dutchman was open to suggestions from the players as well. Richard Arnold, the chief executive of United, and Greenwood concurred that his presence would be an unwelcome distraction.

Since his arrest in January 2022, the club has placed the striker on indefinite suspension. After conducting their own internal scrutiny, the Red Devils came to the conclusion that Greenwood hadn't actually carried out any of the offences for which he had been previously accused.

But the case's smell persisted, and United found the situation intolerable. Greenwood was training in anticipation of his return, but the change in posture has left him dissatisfied.

However, during the summer window deadline day, Getafe approached the forward for a loan move and Mason Greenwood set to remain at the Spanish club for the remainder of the season.

As the purchase by Sheikh Jassim approaches, the new proprietors will need to find a solution to the problem.

The Glazer family is likely to accept a £6 billion offer made by the Qatari financier. A declaration is anticipated the next month, followed by a complete takeover in mid-to-late October.
