Premier League: Six occasions when an 18-year-old scored a hattrick
Evan Ferguson joins A-listers with his latest hat-trick against Newcastle
The talented teenage forward of Brighton, Evan Ferguson is quickly becoming a football sensation. In the last game for the Seagulls before the International break, the 18-year-old scored a hat-trick in a Premier League match against Newcastle on Saturday. Since last season, he has already scored a total of 10 goals in the league.
Now, with all the hype around the Irish teenager, let us take a look at all the previous occasions in the history of the Premier League era (since 1992) when an 18-year-old has scored a hattrick. For context, in more than 30 years, Evan Ferguson is only the fourth player to make it to this prestigious list.
Chris Bart-Williams vs Southampton (1993)
In April 1993, Chris Bart-Williams scored a hat-trick against Southampton in a 5-2 win. A referred forward for Sheffield Wednesday, he even played in the 1993 FA Cup Final. Although he did not make it as big of a name for himself as others on this list, Bart-Williams made his mark in the Premier League with this memorable hat-trick.
Robbie Fowler vs Southampton (1993)
A Liverpool legend by a mile, Robbie Fowler was just a force up front waiting to be unleashed when he scored his first-ever hat-trick for the Reds against Southampton in the Premier League.
An 18-year-old lad called Fowler wins the game for Graeme Souness' Liverpool in a 4-2 victory over Saints in October of the 1993/94 season. He ended that season with 18 goals, and the rest is history!
Michael Owen vs Sheffield Wednesday (1998)
Michael Owen, at 18 years and 62 days old, became the Premier League's youngest hat-trick scorer for Liverpool against Sheffield Wednesday in February 1998. And this record stands to this day! Owen helped his team secure a draw after falling behind 3-1.
His three goals included a clever finish from a pass by Steve McManaman, a tap-in after a shot hit the post, and a skillful far-corner finish from a pass by Paul Ince. This marked a pivotal moment in his early Liverpool career.
Michael Owen vs Newcastle (1998)
Michael Owen scored three goals against Newcastle United, in August of 1998. He helped Liverpool win 4-1, and it's one of his best hat-tricks. Owen's blistering pace and skillset was on show that day wreaking havoc against Sir Robson's side. He sealed his hat-trick with a fantastic run and a goal past Shay Given.
Michael Owen vs Nottingham Forest (1998)
Fans do not regard Owen as they must! Hoping this will change everyone's perspective... 18-year-old Michael Owen bagged a hat-trick for the third time in 1998. Liverpool hailed their hero once again in October, of that year, as he reigned supreme over his opponents. Not just in any way, but in an emphatic fashion by scoring 4 for against a helpless Nottingham Forest side.
Evan Ferguson vs Newcastle (2023)
Evan Ferguson recently joined this elite club by scoring three goals against Newcastle, helping Brighton win 3-0. Albeit it took 'only' 25 years for a player to beat the record. This only furthers the case of the Irish teenage sensation, suggesting a bright future in football.
Ferguson's first goal was a close-range finish after a mistake by Nick Pope. The second one was a beautiful curling shot from outside the penalty area. He completed his hat-trick with a deflected left-footed shot. In addition to this, this was Ferguson's first-ever Premier League hat-trick, and what a way to bring it up!
