Who could be Manchester United's right-winger after Antony's leave of absence?
Antony's absence leaves the Red Devils's right wing in limbo
In August 2022, Antony joined Manchester United for a fee of €95 million. He made his debut for the club in September 2022 and scored a goal in a 3-1 win over Arsenal. Antony is a fast and skillful winger with a good dribbling ability.
However, Manchester United forward has been accused of rape by a woman in Brazil. The allegations against Antony are serious and could have a significant impact on his career. If he is found guilty, he could face criminal charges and a lengthy jail sentence. He could also be banned from playing football.
On the other hand, Antony, who is currently on international duty with Brazil, has denied the allegations. Two more women have accused Antony of physical assault, and the allegations are being investigated by the police in Brazil and Manchester and it is possible that Antony will be cleared of all charges. However, the allegations have already caused significant damage to his reputation and career.
It is not clear who will play in the position, and the team is left with the following options:
5. Jadon Sancho
Before Manchester United's game against Arsenal, Sancho was left out of the squad surprisingly. Erik ten Hag's interview about Sancho's absence following the 3-1 loss to Arsenal claimed that the England international missed the match due to his performances in training. The 23-year-old responded by calling himself a "scapegoat". He is a talented winger who has experience playing on the right side.
4. Mason Mount
After Mason Mount picked up an injury against Tottenham, there is some positive news on his return. he is expected to return as soon as the next Premier League fixture against Brighton or their Champions League against Bayern. On the right wing, Mount can use his dribbling skills to beat defenders and create chances for his teammates. He is also a good crosser of the ball and can provide assists for strikers and will track back to defend when needed.
3. Amad Diallo
Diallo has already shown glimpses of his potential in his short career. He had an instant impact after scoring his first goal against AC Milan in the Europa League tie in 2021. He was then sent on loan to Rangers to get more playing time. Since his return to the squad during pre-season he showed promising signs, but an injury ruled him out of the squad. The left-footed winger's return is still unknown but he is a good fit for the club's attacking style of play and he has the potential to be a regular goalscorer in the absence of Antony.
2. Alejandro Garnacho
Garnacho started the first two teams at the left-wing, even though he doesn't have experience of playing on the right-wing, he still can pose a threat to the opposite team. Garnacho has been impressive for Manchester United since his time at youth teams. He is good at dribbling and creating chances, he is still a developing player, but he has the potential to be a star player for Manchester United.
1. Facundo Pellistri
Pellistri will be hoping for more first-team opportunities for United, he has only played 18 minutes this season off the bench. He continues to be a prominent member of the Uruguay squad, he was a crucial part of Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguayan side who won 3-1 against Chile in FIFA World Cup qualifier. After his performance, Luis Suarez praised the young United winger. He is going to be the first choice at the right-wing position. If he can continue to develop his skills and work ethic, he could be included in Erik ten Hag's plans at Old Trafford.
