The Blaugrana are looking to solidify their defensive midfield

According to ESPN's Sam Marsden and Moi Llorens, Barcelona have set its sights on Liverpool veteran Thiago Alcantara and Arsenal midfielder Jorginho as potential signings to bolster the defensive midfield position in 2013.

Jorginho has long been an individual that Barcelona have been interested in for some time. The veteran Italian international has a track record of success at the highest level, having played for Chelsea and Italy.

The midfielder joined Arsenal in January of this year, and since then, his playing time at the Emirates has decreased. Additionally, as his contract is up at the end of the current campaign, he might be available for nothing.

Barcelona are already making arrangements for the summer of next year, despite the fact the summer transfer window closed just two months ago.

According to sources, the Catalans have indeed identified a number of areas in the team that require strengthening. However, as funding will likely be scarce during the winter, the strategy is to bring in reinforcements during the summer transfer window.

According to reports, Barcelona will need two new fullbacks and a new defensive midfielder by 2024, and potential prospects for both positions have been identified.

But now that his contract is up the following year, he is being considered as a potential pivot player.

In addition to Jorginho and Thiago, Barcelona is rumoured to be monitoring Guido Rodriguez of Real Betis, another prospective free agent for 2019.

Joshua Kimmich, a stalwart for Bayern Munich, is still a consideration, along with several other up-and-coming players like Arthur Vermeeren, Gabriel Moscardo, and Sergi Altimira.
