Diego Simeone was appointed Atletico manager in 2011

In order to continue his tenure as Atletico Madrid manager, Diego Simeone is about to sign a new contract.

The Argentinian manager began leading the La Liga team in 2011 and has had a fruitful nearly 12-year tenure as the Madrid club's manager.

Fabrizio Romano has said that a new contract for the 53-year-old is almost finalised, so it now seems that his rule will continue.

Diego Simeone is about to sign a new contract with Atlético, according to Romano, who broke the news on X. Verbal agreement is in place; simply needs to be sealed, but everything is seen as practically finished.

'After almost 12 years as Atléti coach, Simeone is prepared to accept the proposal and keep staying at the club.'

Diego Simeone has been the club's manager since 2014 and has guided Atletico to La Liga championships in both years as well as the Copa del Rey in 2013.

Simeone has also achieved success in Europe, twice winning the Europa League for Atletico and guiding them to the finals of the Champions League, where they fell to Real Madrid both times.

He has won the Coach of the Year award in LaLiga four times and now holds the record for the longest tenure among the top five leagues in Europe.

Simeone's tenure in leadership is only rivalled by Christian Streich's at Bundesliga club Freiburg when the German took over the team in 2011.

Having assumed control at Anfield in October 2015, Jurgen Klopp is currently the Premier League manager with the longest tenure.
