Luis Diaz's mother rescued after being kidnapped in Colombia
Luis Diaz is out of Liverpool's squad for Nottingham Forest match
The mother of Luis Diaz, a footballer for Liverpool and Colombia, was saved on Saturday from kidnapping in the country's north, according to Colombian President Gustavo Petro, but his father remains missing.
A team of detectives was gathered, according to the Colombian attorney general's office, to look for the pair in Barrancas, a municipality in the country's northern La Guajira region.
Director William Rene Salamanca was consulted by Cilenis Marulanda, Díaz's mother, who was rescued, according to the National Police. Salamanca stated in a video that he is searching for Diaz's father with every agent.
The 26-year-old Díaz's parents were allegedly abducted while driving to their residence. Authorities reported that after stopping them, gunmen on motorcycles took off with their vehicles.
Liverpool acknowledged that they were mindful of the circumstances in an announcement that was released on Sunday.
The Football Federation of Colombia issued a statement in which it condemned the kidnapping and pleaded with the authorities to free the father.
With 43 games under his belt for Colombia, Díaz has remained silent about the event.
In January 2022, Liverpool, a Premier League team, acquired winger Díaz from Porto, a Portuguese club, for a substantial sum of money. In 58 games for the Premier League's biggest clubs, he has 14 goals to his name.
"It is our fervent hope that the matter is resolved safely and at the earliest possible opportunity," the statement read. "In the meantime, the player's welfare will continue to be our immediate priority."
