Andre Onana will represent Cameroon in AFCON in January and February

Just over six months after David de Gea left the team at the end of his contract, Manchester United are thinking of trying to bring him back on a temporary agreement.

De Gea, 32, left the Red Devils when his contract expired in the summer after a fruitful 12-year tenure during which he made 545 appearances. A few United players were not thrilled with the way the Spaniard, who was well-liked in the locker room, was handled.

The Sun now claims that United are thinking of bringing the free agent back because they are concerned about Andre Onana of Cameroon's lack of coverage when he travels to the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

The other two senior goalkeepers for United are Tom Heaton and Altay Bayindir, neither of whom has played yet this season.

Onana is said to have changed his mind about retiring from international football, taking United by surprise. Before Cameroon's September AFCON qualifier against Burundi, the 27-year-old revealed the decision and gave an explanation, citing his "unwavering devotion and loyalty to my homeland."

If Onana is named in the Cameroon team, he may miss up to eight United games, including their Premier League meeting against Tottenham.

The former Ajax custodian has struggled since joining United for £47.2 million in the summer, but on Tuesday he performed a magical feat in the Champions League, saving a spot-kick in the final minute of the second half as United defeated Copenhagen 1-0.

Onana's predecessor left United after making a tearful speech in July, but he hasn't joined a new team. Last month, a story surfaced stating that De Gea is thinking about taking an unexpected retirement if he doesn't have a chance to be a first-choice player at a "major" club.
