Rahul Bheke was one of Des Buckingham's trusted lieutenants at Mumbai City.

In recent seasons, Mumbai City FC emerged as an indomitable force, etching their legacy with accolades and historic feats. The Islanders, touted among the league's best, owe much of their success to Des Buckingham, the orchestrator of their redemption story.

However, shockwaves rippled through the club and its devoted fanbase when the Englishman made the poignant decision to depart. Buckingham, a pivotal figure in Mumbai City's rise, opted to embrace a new challenge at his boyhood club, Oxford United FC, in the English third division.

His departure marked a bittersweet moment as the club bid farewell to one of its cherished architects:

Rahul Bheke’s emotional thread for Des Buckingham

After Des Buckingham departed, Mumbai City FC captain Rahul Bheke expressed his gratitude, acknowledging the coach's role in shaping and developing him as a captain and as a player.

On X (formerly known as Twitter), Bheke posted a thread which read, “Hey Coach Des Buckingham, Wasn’t able to see you in person & say goodbye but now as I sit down to express my gratitude & bid farewell, there is a rush of memories that floods my mind - victories, challenges & the unwavering support in our journey together at Mumbai City FC.”

“Your guidance & mentorship have been instrumental, not just in my growth as a player, but also as a person. I want to express my deepest thanks for the numerous opportunities you entrusted me with.”

“Your belief in my abilities, offering the captaincy, which has been a pinnacle in my career and many more. Wish you the best for all your future endeavours & thank you once again for everything, Coach”, the captain concluded.

Mumbai City FC, currently in Iran for a match against Nassaji Mazandaran, face a dry rubber game having been already eliminated from the AFC Champions League. The daunting task is compounded by the coach's departure and the absence of foreign players for this fixture.
