This was India's last meeting with Kuwait and now they'll fight again in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Indian men's football team secured a historic victory at the SAFF Championship 2023 by triumphing over Kuwait in a thrilling penalty shootout at Bengaluru's Sree Kanteerava Stadium.
The final, which ended 1-1 in regulation time, saw Lallianzuala Chhangte equalise for India after Kuwait took an early lead, courtesy Shabaib Al Khaldi. In the penalty shootout, India emerged victorious with a 5-4 scoreline, with Kuwait's captain Hajjeia missing the decisive spot-kick.
Despite Indian head coach Igor Stimac being banned from the touchline, strategic changes, including the return of players like Akash Mishra, Nikhil Poojary, and Sandesh Jhingan, played a pivotal role. The team showcased resilience, countering Kuwait's attacks and levelling the score.
This triumph marked the Blue Tigers' ninth SAFF Championship title in 14 editions and followed their recent success in the Intercontinental Cup. Throughout the tournament, Igor Stimac's side displayed prowess, defeating Lebanon in the semi-finals and navigating the group stage with wins over Pakistan and Nepal, along with a draw against Kuwait. The victory reflects the team's determination and skill on the international stage.
