The Lion City Cup, established by the Football Association of Singapore in 1977, served as the model for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. The world's first under-16 football competition was called the Lion City Cup.

FIFA established the FIFA U-16 World Championship on the advice of Sepp Blatter, the organization's chief executive at the time, while he was in Singapore to host the 1982 Lion City Cup.

Since 1985, when the inaugural event took place in China, tournaments have been held every two years. The competition was initially restricted to players under the age of 16, but starting with the 1991 edition, the age limit was expanded to 17. 1,347,133 people attended the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017, making it the most attended competition in the event's existence. India served as the championship's host nation.

Boasting five titles and three runners-up finishes, Nigeria has been the most accomplished country in the history of the competition. With four titles and two runners-up finishes, Brazil is the world's second-greatest nation. The competition has been won twice by Ghana and Mexico.
