The Indian Women’s League (IWL) is all set to make a comeback for the 2023-24 season from December 8 onwards. The league will feature seven teams from all across the country who will fight for the top honours.

42 league matches will be played across different states and stadiums to decide the ultimate champion of the 2023-24 Indian Women’s League (IWL). On that note, let us take a look at all you need to know about the IWL.

About the tournament

The tournament was founded back in 2016 with an aim to increase the player pool for the Indian national women’s team. It was planned in 2014 after India’s success at the SAFF Women’s Championship. 

It was established in 2016 as India’s first professional football league for women. The eventual goal of the IWL was to get prepared for qualification to the AFC Women’s Asian Cup and the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The most successful club in the history of the IWL is Gokulam Kerala FC who have the championship a record three times. Eastern Sporting Union, Rising Students’ Club and Sethu FC have won it once each.

Format

The league will be played in a double round-robin format, with each club playing the other twice, once at home and once away. All clubs will play a total of 12 matches. Moreover, it’ll be the first IWL season to be played on home & away basis unlike the previous edition which was played at a centralised venue.
