Palestine win more than hearts as AFC Asian Cup 2023 run comes to end against Qatar

In a crucial encounter of the AFC Asian Cup 2023 round-of-16, the hosts Qatar grabbed a 2-1 victory over Palestine. The atmosphere was an electrifying one with Qatari fans shouting their hearts out for their nation.
Palestine coming out of the war effects had qualified for round-of-16 which was a great comeback for them. Although Qatar came into this fixture confident about grabbing an easy victory, they faced a tough time from the Palestinian team.
The match started well with the hosts Qatar dominating the proceedings. It was a full house as Qatar supporters came in numbers to support. It was already known that underdogs Palestine would play a counter-attacking football allowing their opponents to have the ball.
Qatar started with their attacking formation 3-5-2 with Afif controlling the midfield and making the dangerous runs. Palestine players made it very difficult for Qatar to open up their defense. The players from Palestine after all the horror and effects of the war were putting their all defending for their nation. Akram Afif was looking brilliant with his ball movement and the through passes.
The Al Bayt Stadium was jam-packed with Qatar fans shouting and cheering for their nation to grab the victory and earn their place in the quarters. Although it was one-way traffic Palestine made a quick counter-attack in the ninth minute which showed their intent in the game and scared the Qatar defense.
Palestine had to deal with a shower of crosses from Waad of Qatar. On the 18th-minute mark, a sudden move from Palestine and a beautiful shot by Amid Mahajna were kept out by the Qatar keeper. Suddenly Palestine looked lively and in a much unexpected defensive error by Qatar, Oday Dabbagh took advantage to put Palestine forward with a remarkable solo goal by dribbling two Qatari defenders.
The stadium went silent as the hosts conceded this astonishing goal. It was a huge moment for the underdogs as they scored the goal with a lot of hard work. Qatar came back strong with a series of attacks from both flanks. They got their reward in the additional time just before half-time whistle as Qatar’s skipper Al Haydos scored from a well-rehearsed corner from Afif.
The hosts started the second half with even more aggression and Afif’s through ball earned a penalty for the Asian heavyweights. Afif took it brilliantly as Qatar went 2:1 up against a tired Palestine team. The crowd roared all over the stadium as the 12th men. The second half was all about Qatar as they dominated the play with most of the possession.
The job for Palestine was very difficult as they tried hard to attack after defending the entire half. The intense moment in the game came during the last ten minutes as Palestine tried their best for the equalizer. Qatar was certainly on the back foot as the Palestine players went all out with their attacks.
The effort they put in after so much negativity faced by them outside the football world is a real demonstration of sheer skill and determination. While they couldn’t save their backs in the end, their fight will be remembered in the history of the AFC Asian Cup after coming in the tournament from the aftershocks of the war.
