Sunil Chhetri, the face of Indian football, expressed his gratitude for the growing support from fans, emphasizing how crucial it is for the players to feel the backing of the country when they step onto the field. The captain addressed, “Well it’s amazing to play outside the country and get that kind of reception. We as a team are really grateful to everyone who came and supported us.”

When Chhetri was asked about increasing number of fans in the stadium from 9,000 in 2011 AFC Asian Cup to 36,000 in the on-going 2023 AFC campaign. The captain-leader-legend added, “It’s a genuine good feeling. It’s sad that we couldn’t give them much to cheer for. In the coming games I hope they come again and we can give them back something to cheer for.”

Gurpreet’s conclusions on backing for Indian football and growing fans encouragement

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, the pillar of strength between the goalposts, echoed Chhetri’s sentiments. He highlighted the unique advantage of having fans rallying behind the team, stating that it adds an extra dimension to their performance.

The goalie added, “How well people love us over here and they came out in numbers and there was never a doubt. We just wanted to enjoy the atmosphere and use it to our advantage. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen tonight but hopefully it happens in the next two games for us.”

The growing interest and support for Indian football have not gone unnoticed, with fans rallying behind the team in unprecedented numbers. Speaking from the heart, Gurpreet shared his confidence for the future, highlighting the incredible fan support and national support that has driven Indian football into the international scene.

Gurpreet said, “I mean Sunil bhai said in the dressing room this is the first time we are playing a World Cup side and to see us going tooth and nail against sides like this shows the kind of development that we have made in the last few years and it’s just going to get better and hopefully people stand by us and support us. Chhetri’s value’s on his performance against Australia

Sunil Chhetri, who has been a consistent performer and goal-scorer for the national team was also a part of 2011 AFC Asian Cup roster. Despite the mixed emotions surrounding the outcome, the Blue Tigers remains optimistic about the future. He added by saying, “It wasn’t easy. When you’re playing a team which is one of the best in Asia, plays the World Cup, it isn’t easy.”

Chhetri also emphasized that there are areas for improvement, and the head coach, Igor Stimac will thoroughly analyze the game through video sessions to identify key areas of development ahead for their next match.

He added on by saying, “I’m pretty sure there are a few things that we can improve on, and the rest of the coach will watch the videos and tell us. But the feeling is a mixed one, where I think all the boys give their best, but we will have to try and take something from the game.”
