The Blue Tigers need a victory against Syria to keep their hopes of progressing from the group stage alive.

After suffering two consecutive defeats in their opening matches at the AFC Asian Cup 2023, the Indian football team is on the brink of concluding their campaign in Doha. Their sole opportunity to sustain their hopes until the conclusion of the group stage lies in securing a victory against Syria in their upcoming game.

Especially, in the match against Uzbekistan, the Indian football team consistently struggled in both defense and in capitalizing on the opportunities that arose. Although they exhibited a more cohesive defensive performance against the Australian team, this momentum was notably absent in their most recent match.

Here are five points that India must look to change in their match against Syria.

1. Play a No. 5, like they did against Australia

When discussing the fifth position, it pertains to the defensive line of the team. The Indian team entered the field against Australia with Nikhil Poojary, Sandesh Jhingan, Rahul Bheke and Subhasish Bose forming the defensive unit. However, in the match against Uzbekistan, Bose was substituted by Akash Mishra at the beginning of the game.

In the event of such a scenario, it is advisable to deploy the team that exhibited greater defensive strength in the initial game for the final match, in order to establish a sturdy defensive line.

2. Conservative first, aggressive later

The Indian football team should exercise patience in the initial half of the game, focusing on defensive strategies to thwart attacks, while making minimal attempts at offensive play. Subsequently, during the latter half of the game, it would be prudent for them to transition to an assertive and attacking mindset, as this approach is more conducive to achieving favorable results.

3. Brandon should always start

Brandon Fernandes was only able to play in one match as a substitute to Anirudh Thapa in the match against Uzbekistan. It is advisable to include the midfielder in the starting lineup to provide support to the forward in the attacking game, which would be beneficial for the Indian team.

4. Starting with Rahul KP instead of Manvir Singh as the RW

Manvir Singh appeared to be out of form during his time on the field in the previous match. He struggled to maintain possession and made several errors. Rahul KP’s entry at the beginning of the second half noticeably bolstered the Indian team’s performance. It is recommended that he be entrusted with the responsibility on the right wing.

5. Getting Chhangte in the team if he is fit.

Undoubtedly, Lallianzuala Chhangte proved to be a formidable presence on the left flank during the initial match against Australia. The young player possesses impressive skills and demonstrates exceptional speed on the field. Despite missing the second match due to injury, the management should consider his inclusion in the team if he has recovered, as he would complement the team’s overall dynamics.
