India failed to register a point and a goal in the AFC Asian Cup 2023.

The Indian national team announced their departure from the current AFC Asian Cup, the premier competition of the Asian Football Confederation, on January 23, 2024, following their defeat to Syria in their final Group Stage match at the Al Bayt stadium in Qatar.

With three losses against Australia, Uzbekistan, and Syria in Group B, India had a dismal start to the year. India conceded six goals in three ties, but they did not manage a single goal in return. The fans’ doubts about Indian football’s gradual learning curve have been reinforced by this.

Historically speaking, the Blue Tigers performed better in their previous AFC Asian Cup campaign based on statistics. India were eliminated from the Group Stage itself in 2019 as well, but they did so after winning 4-1 against Thailand. Despite their defeats in their matches against Bahrain (by a whisker) and UAE, they did demonstrate a resolute attitude on the field.

Igor Stimac, the head coach of the Indian football team, recently shared insights about the team’s play on social media. Although he feels his team fell short of their potential, he is nonetheless pleased with the amount of work they did throughout the game. The manager is overwhelmed by the fans’ gesture in the stands and thanked them for their unwavering support.

“I understand the fans’ frustration and disappointment. We feel the exact same way. The boys didn’t perform up to the level I know they are capable of, but I know they gave it their all and I’m proud of them. We need to play at a higher level consistently to be more comfortable and better prepared at these tournaments. Lots to think about and lots to work on.”

“Thank you to all the fans back home and in Qatar. We feel the love and appreciate you all,” coach Igor Stimac added in the closure of his post.
