Indian football league system is surprisingly young for such a huge country that opened its doors to international influences a long time ago. But as the most populous country in the world (sorry, China, you’re not the first anymore), India surely promises to become a decent soccer nation, to say the least. We believe that the future of football in India is extremely bright, but let’s not jump to conclusions before explaining the origins of this country’s football competitions.

Football Development in India: An Overview

The Indian Super League (ISL) is India’s professional football league that kicked off in October 2014. Though young, the competition took just five years to gain international recognition from the world’s leading sports authority FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association).

Ever since its inception, the soccer league in India has followed a franchise system with teams representing different cities. This is similar to the NBA system, which clearly shows the influence of the US sports organizations on domestic competitions. The best thing is that it didn’t take long for the ISL to popularize football in the country.

So, is football growing in India? It most definitely is. Though the sport still isn’t as popular as cricket, for example, it is quickly gaining traction. We can already see some international football names as well as experienced coaches working in this league. For instance, the Argentinian international Alexis Gomez is currently one of the league’s most notable names.

The ISL typically runs from October to March. Its format includes a league stage followed by playoffs leading to the final. A dozen teams participate in this competition:

  1. Bengaluru FC (Bengaluru, Sree Kanteerava Stadium)
  2. Punjab FC (Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium)
  3. Jamshedpur FC (Jamshedpur, JRD Tata Sports Complex)
  4. NorthEast United FC (Guwahati, Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium)
  5. FC Goa (Goa, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium)
  6. East Bengal FC (Kolkata, Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan)
  7. Hyderabad FC (Hyderabad, G.M.C Balayogi Athletic Stadium)
  8. Kerala Blasters FC (Kochi, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium)
  9. Mohun Bagan Super Giant (Kolkata, Vivekananda Yuba Bharatis Krirangan)
  10. Chennaiyin FC (Chennai, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium)
  11. Mumbai City FC (Mumbai, Mumbai Football Arena)
  12. Odisha FC (Bhubaneswar, Kalinga Stadium)

Long-Term Projections: The ISL future

The league is not even in its teenage years, but its managers definitely think long-term. So, what are their plans from the long-term perspective? What’s the purpose and the future of ISL?

For one, it is to popularize football in India. The aim is to attract a larger fan base and increase the overall interest in the sport by creating a professional league with a high standard of play. It will have an ancillary effect: The league will develop homegrown football talent. By providing a platform for Indian players to compete at a professional level alongside international players and experienced coaches, ISL officials aim to elevate the skill level of local footballers.

Of course, this is not possible without some serious fan engagement. That’s why the ISL also focuses on creating a vibrant football culture in the country. This involves several strategic activities:

  • Marketing campaigns
  • Community outreach programs
  •  School promotion

In the long run, the ultimate goal is to ensure a positive impact on the performance of the Indian national football team. A stronger domestic league can contribute to a more competitive national team, which, in turn, can enhance India’s standing in the international football arena.

The Future Looks Bright

It’s fair to call the ISL a baby league, but we can also share one bold projection with you: This competition will soon become a medium-level quality league. India is one of the world’s rising powers, and it reflects on all aspects of life and work, so we expect the same thing to happen in the sports niche.
