India were one of the two teams in AFC Asian Cup 2023 to not score a goal.
India had a disastrous 2023 AFC Asian Cup campaign as they failed to win any of their three group stage fixtures. The Blue Tigers had a very tough time in Doha as they became one of the only two sides to have not scored a single goal at the tournament.
Following the conclusion of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, India are set to drop 15 places in the latest FIFA rankings (as per Footy Rankings). They have now become the side to have lost most FIFA rankings places among all the AFC Asian Cup teams.
Vietnam are second on the list and are set to lose 12 places and will now be ranked 106 while China, who are placed third on the list, will lose nine spots and will be ranked 88th in the latest FIFA rankings.
India set to drop to 117 in the FIFA rankings
Prior to the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, India was ranked 102. They lost 2-0 to quarter-finalists Australia, and slipped four spots to be in 106. After that, following the match against Uzbekistan, they fell down a few more spots.
As previously mentioned, following the Asian Cup, India are expected to fall to 117, which would be their lowest ranking ever since Igor Stimac took over the hot seat. Furthermore, since 2017, this will be India’s lowest ranking.
India’s performance at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup
The Blue Tigers began their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Australia where they had a lot of positives to take away. After a strong first half performance, India succumbed to the pressure from the Socceroos as Jackson Irvine and Jordan Bos found the back of the net.
In the second match, India were torn to shreds by Uzbekistan in a one-sided encounter. Uzbekistan were too good and too much for India to handle. Abbosbek Fayzullaev, Igor Sergeev and Sherzod Nasrullaev scored one goal each in the first half and ensured all three points for their side.
Finally, in the third match, India put up a good display for the majority of the game, but failed to capitalize on their chances. But, Syria did not fail as super sub Omar Khribin found the back of the net in the 76th minute.
India has lost 35.57 points in total after their forgetful display at the continental championship and this will possibly go down as one of the worst performances by the Blue Tigers at the international stage.
