For the first time ever, the Women's World Cup will be co-hosted by two countries: Australia and New Zealand

The FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 is all set to take place between 20 July 2023 and 20 August 2023. The ninth edition of the World Cup will be hosted jointly by Australia and New Zealand. No team, men's or women's, has ever won three consecutive World Cups.

If the United States is able to win it again this year, it will become the first team to do so. It's also the first World Cup that will be hosted in the Southern Hemisphere. But before the ball gets rolling, here are some records you should know going into the tournament.

Here is a look at all the records that have been made in the FIFA Women's World Cup:

In the previous eight editions, the USA have won four World Cups, and Germany has won two. Japan and Norway have also won one cup each.

Most wins and matches played in the World Cup

The USWNT have won 40 matches and are the most successful team in the tournament. The Americans also hold the record for most matches played (50).

Most player appearances in FIFA Women’s World Cup history

The record for most caps in a FIFA Women’s World Cup is held by retired American footballer Kristine Lilly, who managed 30 appearances across five World Cups between 1991 and 2007. Brazilian star Formiga is second with 27 appearances, and the USA’s Carli Lloyd is third with 25.

Biggest margin win in a match of World Cup

The United States holds the record for the largest margin of victory and most goals scored by a single team at a FIFA Women's World Cup with their 13-0 thrashing of Thailand in 2019.

Brazil's Marta scored 17 goals at the Women's World Cup, the most of all time. The only other active player with double-digit goals is Christine Sinclair, who's scored 10 for Canada. The United States' Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe each have nine.

Most goals scored by a player in the single World Cup Campaign

Michelle Akers became the leading scorer in the inaugural FIFA Women's World Cup in China in 1991, scoring ten goals, including five in one game. It still remains a record that has stood strong for 33 years. Brazil’s Marta scored seven goals in the 2007 campaign, coming the closest to the record.

Most goals in FIFA Women’s World Cup history

Marta, the six-time World Player of the Year winner, holds the record for the most goals scored in World Cup history with 17. Germany’s Birgit Prinz and Abby Wambach are joint-second with 14 goals apiece.

Most appearances by teams in the World Cup

Seven countries have qualified for all nine Women's World Cups (including 2023): The United States, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Japan, Brazil and Nigeria.

Most top three finishes in the World Cup

USA have finished in the top three in every campaign since the start of the competition in 1991, to be precise, eight times in total: four times on the 1st (2019, 2015, 1999, 1991), three times on the 3rd (2007, 2003, and 1995), and one time on the 2nd (2011).

Goals scored in the consecutive World Cup competition

Marta and Christine Sinclair have scored at least one goal in the last five consecutive Women's World Cups, making them the only two players in the tournament's history to accomplish that feat.

Most clean sheets in FIFA Women’s World Cup history

Briana Scurry, who represented the USA between 1995 and 2007, holds the record for the most clean sheets in World Cup history.

Most yellow cards in FIFA Women’s World Cup history

Charmaine Hooper of Canada holds the record for most cautions in World Cup history. Among the countries, Brazil has seen 55 cautions which is the highest.

Most-red cards in FIFA Women’s World Cup history

24 players have been sent off once in the history of the World Cup. Australia is the team that has seen the most sending-offs, with three players given marching orders.
