AIFF invites new clubs to join I-League from 2020 onward

The governing body issued a statement to drum up interest from local clubs from non-I-League cities.

"All India Football Federation has issued an invite to accept bids for new clubs from non-I-League cities to join the I-League from 2020 onward," read an official statement from the governing body.

By inducting more clubs from new cities to the league, the AIFF aims to generate interest in football in different regions. Amongst others, bids are being welcomed from clubs from prominent cities such as New Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Ranchi, Bhopal, Jodhpur and Ahmedabad. Clubs from some of these cities are already participating in the I-League 2nd Division and it will be interesting to see if more entities come into the reckoning.

That said, the AIFF has also stated that, "As per the invitation to tender, the entity that wins the bid will be granted the right to own and operate a new football club from 2020 onward. The aforementioned club will have the opportunity (if applicable, and subject to qualification) to also compete in AFC club competitions."

Moreover, the AIFF has decided to implement the 3+1 foreigners rule in the I-League from next season. This is a great opportunity for domestic players to show a glimpse of their talent. It is a chance for new talent to make a name for themselves among the Indian football fraternity. In it's bid to develop football in the country, the AIFF has thus taken a huge step towards creating opportunities for local clubs and players.

"The invitation to tender can be acquired from the Football House in New Delhi between June 10 and June 20, 2020 upon payment of ₹4,00,000.00 (non-refundable and non-adjustable) by demand draft, pay order (both payable at New Delhi) favouring All India Football Federation, or by NEFT/RTGS. Bank details will be provided upon request," the statement further read.
